Trainer Joemar Buyao on how the ‘Avengers’ theme can keep you gym motivated

This post is part of a series of Queerty interviews with models, trainers, dancers, and, well, people who inspire us to stay in shape–0r just sit on the couch ogling them instead.

Name: Joemar Buyao, 27

City: Las Vegas, NV

Occupation: I am a personal trainer and also work as a personal assistant/medical scribe at an LGBTQ clinic in Vegas.

Favorite Gym: LVAC and Eos

Favorite Exercise Playlist: Honestly, it is really random. It can go from “Echame La Culpa” by Luis Fonsi, “New Blood” by Zayde Wolf, “Dance with Me” tonight by Olly Murs all the way to The Avengers theme song by Alan Silvestri, “Rule the World” by Walk off the Earth, and “Sweet but Psycho” by Ava Max. I think it is whatever puts me either in a good mood or an “anything is possible” mood.

Best food to eat prior to a workout: Nachos and Hamburgers. Just kidding. When I workout in the morning, I have some whole grain toast, scrambled egg whites, and some type of fruit. Nothing too heavy.

Best Workout Outfit: I love Jed North, Odin and Hylete. They just fit well and accentuate the right curves in the right places. 😉

How do you balance staying in shape and having fun? The gym is fun. Always finding a way to better who I am regardless if it is physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually is fun. Aside from that, I am a nerd and love video games. But I and my friends do this game where if we lose or die a certain amount of times, then we have to do a certain amount of whatever workout. For example, first place does not have to do any push-ups, second place will have to do 10, third place will do 20, etc.

Basic Workout Tip: Don’t be intimidated by what other people are doing. Everyone at the gym is at different levels of experience. You shouldn’t be forcing yourself to lift heavy because that is what the person next to you is doing. You should be working out for yourself and getting there at a pace that works for you. Any pace faster than what you should be doing might cause you to injure yourself and now you just screwed yourself into being out of the workout game for weeks-months.

What do you keep on your nightstand? Water, phone, smartwatch, lotion…. (J/k)
