A transgender teen claims he was kicked out of a Ted Cruz rally for being trans.

Speaking to the Frederick News Post, 16-year-old James Van Kuilenburg claims he tried to attend the rally at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Maryland to stand up for LGBT youth:

“As a member of the LGBT community, and considering that Ted Cruz is extremely homophobic and transphobic, I came here to represent the LGBT youth that are hurt by his propaganda and rhetoric.”

After Donald Trump‘s support of Caitlyn Jenner and other transgender people affected by so-called “bathroom bills,” the Cruz campaign ran this transphobic ad, which is strikingly similar to ads used by opponents of trans-inclusive laws across the country.

For this teen, things didn’t go according to plan.

Van Kuilenburg claims he was sitting inside the event when a staffer asked him to leave because he was involved in an earlier incident at the location. Though Van Kuilenburg denies the earlier incident, he spoke out to the Frederick News Post outside.
