This shouldn’t really come as news to anyone, but asking a gay celebrity if he likes to top or bottom is best to be avoided.
Unfortunately, the New Zealand LGBTQ magazine Express didn’t get that memo during a sitdown with pop singer Troye Sivan.
Sivan, 24, called the question “wildly invasive”, and the general consensus has been yes, it sure is.

More specifically, the interviewer asked Troye if his boyfriend, model Jacob Bixenman, would give him a “hall pass” to bed Shawn Mendes (strange territory already), and if Sivan was a top or bottom.
“Ooo… definitely passing,” Sivan responded. Later he addressed the awkward moment on Twitter:

He was smart not to ask the interviewer that question. The fact that it was asked probably means the interviewer would have answered and not understood that the guy was trying to teach him a lesson.

Unusual for a gay publication, I think. I’m 58. Straight people seem to assume if you are gay, that you engage in every behavior they have ever heard gay men do, and some their own imagination comes up with. It usually doesn’t matter if you correct them or not as denying just feeds into their preconceived notions. I’ve tried turning it back on them and asking if their wife/GF pegs them and they get offended for some reason. A woman at work asked me in front of a room full of co-workers if I “like(d) getting anal”, then proceeded to explain how wonderful it was. She was a divorced mother of two teen boys who had no problem talking about sex at all and kept her boys supplied with condoms because she assumed they were as active as she was. She would joke the brown-outs our small town had were when she plugged in her vibrator as battery power just didn’t get the job done.
