“I have to get comfortable with the fact that I am kind of effeminate sometimes–or really effeminate sometimes. That I want to paint my nails.
Overcoming all those stupid rules that society embeds in you as a kid about gender and sexuality is a conscious task.
I have almost exclusively LGBT people around me [now]. That instilled a sense of confidence in me. That I have every reason to be proud of who I am.”Troye Sivan speaking to The Guardian about still working to find the courage to fully express his sexuality.

Im sure there are boys who look up to him .and some who find him attractive..the blond hair makes him.look anemic..ive seen him on various shows promoting his music which is whispery and monotone..ive never heard one of his songs on the radio..Troye isnt doing anything to butch up his twinky image so its what it is…feminine looks and singing
…wonder why the label ??

He is feminine and that’s perfectly fine. What bothers me is he apparent buying in of the notion that being feminine is somehow not the ideal or worse, unattractive. That’s a rather self-loathing concept mixed in with oddly misogynist subtext ie: feminine = unwanted.
Crystix
Have you lived in the world? He’s literally commenting how growing up, even with a supportive lgbt crowd, still makes it hard to value the feminine. Its not him self-loathing, its society teaching him to self loath what isn’t masculine.
justgeo
Like your music just stop being a baby about your choices as to how you express who/what you are.
Crystix
U wreak of toxic masculinity, bro
whitakerk861
justgeo reeks of a young gay who cannot stand others their age publicly stepping out of the closet and into the light
whitakerk861
Yeah well, news flash, no one is comfortable being themselves at his age.

If he were 16 I would agree with your comment but he is 23, he should be mostly comfortable with himself by this time.

Take away the make-up and costumes he uses only in videos and Troye Sivan is about as effeminate as 40% of teenage to twentyish boys these days. I can’t help think he’s playing up his feminine side for the sake of a showbiz identity (like many an artist before him), but also that we need to re-examine notions of what is “effeminate”. Boys (straight or gay) who are pretty and/or sensitive/artistic no longer necessarily feel they have to butch it up as though compensating for some deficit. Which is progress of sorts.
bonbon
And yet here he is posing for photos like that.

By saying he’s uncomfortable being feminine he’s implying that there’s something wrong with being feminine, not cool Troye, time to break the stereotypes and the shame!!

“Overcoming all those stupid rules that society embeds in you as a kid about gender and sexuality is a conscious task.”
He’s not the one saying its wrong to be feminine.
kevininbuffalo
He’s trying to live up to a self imposed ideal. He really needs to find his own comfort level and go with it for a while. Maybe later he’ll feel like venturing into the deep end of the pool.
azzolina
It sometimes takes a while to be comfortable with yourself. I agree with those that comment on the role toxic masculinity plays in shame about not being masculine enough.

Suck it up buttercup, you’re a flaming fem for life and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it. Stop bitching about it accept who you are and get the hell over it……FYI if you’re really not comfortable with the whole fem thing then wearing whore red lipstick and eyeshadow isn’t going to help your argument.

There was a time when I wondered about the nature of really effeminate gay guys. Somewhere in the back of my head I thought maybe it was an act to some extent. Then I worked in a high school, one that was fairly small. There was a freshman who hung around all girls and was very effeminate. He was not out as being gay. That was a lightbulb moment for me.
The point is that if you’re effeminate, embrace it. It’s who you are. Nothing to be ashamed of. I hope Troye can move past that and become comfortable in his own skin.
