Tomorrow, Trump will headline the “Road to Majority” conference, an evangelical extremist gathering hosted by the homophobic Faith and Freedom Coalition. This is in addition to his refusal to issue a proclamation acknowledging June as Pride month.

Trump is scheduled to speak just three days before the LGBTQ Equality March in Washington D.C., which many are interpreting as an not-so-subtle nod toward his commitment to subverting LGBTQ rights.
“President Trump’s negligence at the start of Pride month provided another example that this administration is no friend to the community,” says Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “While the Trump Administration tries to systematically erase LGBTQ people and families from the fabric of this nation, LGBTQ Americans and allies must do what we know best this Pride month—stay visible and march for acceptance.”

We shouldn’t forget it was Democrats who led the effort to pass the federal RFRA law. Chuck Schumer introduced it in the Senate and another Dem in the House. It did pass with near unanimous support, signed by Bill Clinton (if Obama was in power back then he’d likely have signed it too). Those have been replicated on the state level and are perceived as a threat to gay rights although many courts have tended to not give them much weight.

If, as you say, he is ‘pandering to the religious sect’ what does he hope to achieve? He is supposed to be President of the United States of America – why would he need to pander to these people? Any president with any degree of integrity and intelligence would know that pandering to to these types of people can only end in disaster. These groups have a VERY old view of the world, their view is rapidly being overtaken by the younger generation who have a much more modern view of society. These groups days are numbered and any president that aligns with them only demonstrates a clear lack of judgement or desperation, in Trump’s case I think it is sadly both.

Nobody should be surprised, but it really is sad and frustrating. Trump got into office by tricking thousands of moderate and independent voters to vote for him ‘just to see’ what he’d do and to ‘shake things up.’ Now, our alliances are breaking apart, three-fourths of America are against him and his draconian policies and policy objectives, and the international community thinks America is a joke and is on its last legs. Germany and France are now the bastions of freedom and Democracy. Even though the Hitler analogy has been overused by every critic of every President, it truly does apply here. Trump is a fascist who caters to the Evangelical community who are themselves homophobic, anti-abortion at any cost, and desire to turn America into a theocracy where their interpretation of the Bible becomes the rule of law and any violation of it punishable by law. Both Trump and Pence are a danger to this country. Hopefully we survive this – literally and figuratively.
