RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 2 winner Tyra Sanchez, whose real name is James Ross IV, has been arrested in Virginia for a misdemeanor assault.

According to Virginia Beach court records, Tyra was arrested in Virginia on September 9, 15 days after the offense date of August 25. The complaint, which was filed by one Daniel Alonso, has been categorized under Virginia’s assault and battery penalty code 18.2-57. If found guilty, this penalty code may require her to spend a minimum of six month in mandatory confinement.

Tyra was arraigned in court the same day and bail was set. Since then, she has posted bail and has been released. A follow up court date has been set for October 8.

10/13/2014 UPDATE: Following her October 8 court date, the case was finalized and was dismissed by the court. Tyra was not sentenced to any time in jail or on probation.

9/11/2014 UPDATE: TMZ and World of Wonder have reported that Tyra has claimed that she was beaten up by security at the Rainbow-Cactus Company in Virginia Beach.

According to TMZ:
James Ross, who goes by Tyra Sanchez, tells TMZ he was signing autographs at the Rainbow-Cactus Company in Virginia Beach a few weeks ago … when a guy in the crowd started heckling him.

Tyra claims he approached the man to try to calm the situation, but a security guard for the venue suddenly grabbed him, slammed him to the ground, and cuffed him … though he eventually let him go. He claims he suffered a cut to his head, a sprained shoulder, and bruises.

On Monday, Tyra went to police to file charges against the venue … only to discover there was a warrant out for HIS arrest. He says he turned himself in, posted bond, and was released.

Tyra says he still plans to take legal action against the guard and the Rainbow-Cactus Company. We haven’t heard back from the venue.
Additionally, Tyra told World of Wonder, “My arm has been in a sling since I was released from the hospital, and I’ve been on pain killers and muscle relaxers. I was really angry at the time, now I just want it all to end.”

This arrest is not Tyra’s first since winning the second cycle of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2010. In August 2011, she had a publicly known run-in with the law, in which she was arrested in Georgia for possession of marijuana. In this incident, she posted bail and was released the next day.

Tyra has not made any announcements about the incident on social media, but we have reached out to her for a public statement.
