Nobody knows where the hashtag started, but it appears to have come from an individual and grown organically, as opposed to being a preconceived campaign set up for charity.

It’s now trending hugely with more than 51,000 mentions on Twitter as of yesterday.

According to BBC, a staff member at Cancer Research UK joined the trend and posted the message “the campaign isn’t ours but every £ helps,” along with instructions on how to donate for cancer research.

Since then, the trend has caught on and Cancer Research UK has received more than 800,000 text donations this week, raising over $1.6 million (£1 million), with other cancer charities also reporting significant donations.

So, some guy feeling left out decided to do his bit by posting a selfie with a full face of girlie make-up. This has sparked a new hashtag for all us guys out there: #manupandmakeup

Don’t you just love the internet sometimes?
