CNN asked web visitors if “the surge in gay TV characters ‘bad for society.'” The BBC asked web visitors, “Should homosexuals face execution?” And this week Univision asked web visitors, “Is it correct for a bishop to call gays ‘faggots’?,” following Catholic Bishop Luis Bambaren’s remarks. (That comes after Univision asked readers in September, “Is soccer compatible with sexuality?”) And just like those other media outlets, Univision has since yanked the poll from its website.

More importantly, is it OK for people to refer to Catholic Bishops as “suspected child rapists?”

These polls pretty much show that, worldwide, we still are NOT recognized as fully human. Our entire livelihoods are still under debate and under attack. We aren’t recognized as “normal” as other minorities. And that’s why you see these offensive questions. That’s why you continue seeing pollsters asking heterosexuals about same-sex marriage as well. Common sense tells you, no, it’s not OK to intentionally attack a group of people for who they are. However, that mentality changes when it comes to us. When those people are faggots, it becomes somewhat OK, if not totally OK, to denigrate our existences, or not care if it’s happening.

Note that all three media outlets are television outlets — a dying, out-of-touch, obsolete medium that has little insight about and relevance within everyday life.

Univision is a piece of shit, controlled by Televisa which is still very much homophobic in its approach to homosexuals. They also make fun of gays A LOT in tv shows and soap operas, and use us as stereotypes. I’ve called Glaad so many times tellign them this but I never get an answer, I wonder why they even exist if they choose to ignore this just because it’s in spanish.
That’s why I prefer Telemundo, much more respectful and realistic when it comes to showing our community and how we are.
