Last Friday, we reported on the unnamed man who went overboard the Allure of the Seas, the Royal Caribbean cruise ship chartered by Atlantis Events. He has now been identified as 30-year-old Kenneth John Gemmell of Bailieborough, Co Cavan, Ireland.
A witness Friday morning had seen a man intentionally leap from his balcony aboard The Allure, which heading to Cozumel, Mexico, as part of its tour of the Caribbean. Close-circuit cameras confirmed the incident and crew members began passenger checks, with the Mexican coast guard helping to search the waters.
The exact circumstances under which Gemmell, a flight attendant with UAE Airlines, went overboard aren’t clear. TheExaminer.com reports:
The family says that some information has already come their way. One party told them that Kenneth may have been arguing with a ship’s crew member (perhaps a bartender) in one of the bars late Thursday night or early Friday morning. They were also told that the crew member, a man they understood was sharing a room with a Canadian citizen, left the ship in Cozumel.
Gemmell’s grieving family in Ireland is hoping someone on board will come forward with more information to help bring closure to this tragedy.

His name is not relevant, why he did it is.
TASTEY GOODIES
@Mike1987: Agreed. the guy looked handsome and I wonder what happened to the “fightin’ Irish” spirit of this young man?. So sad that he felt this was the ONLY option.

Perhaps drugs or alcohol lead to a unintentionally-poor decision.

I can totally get inside this guys head.
sucks for him.

@shannon: shannon, how do you know he was a meth head? Did you know him personally? It is not kind to speak ill of the dead, regardless.

I keep thinking it was alcohol. It was either late at night, or early in the morning; that when most of these kinds of things happen. I don’t know for sure, but that’s what my common sense is telling me.
allurecrew
I highly doubt an allure crew member was sharing a room with a Canadian guest…. I worked on the Allure for several months and whether you know the person or not, crew members aren’t allowed to stay in guest cabins and they will be caught if they do. That being sid, if the crew member did that he would most likely be fired the next morning and be sent home from Cozumel, so maybe…

I am so sorry for that guy, most likely he had alcohol in his blood

This is just horrible and sad news. I went on the Allure last year. It is a big ship. I was reading the alumni web site of Atlantis and there is a story of gentleman who actually was with Kenneth dancing at Blaze, which is one of the night clubs. The last time he saw Kenneth was 5AM. Apparently, they had gone to Kenneth’s room so he could change and according to the guy, Kenneth was very drunk and loud, but the roommate (who I think was the CANADIAN) did not mind. They went back to the club and he hung around with him. Kenneth wanted him to stay longer and hang with him at the dance club, but he couldn’t as he was very tired. Earlier, Kenneth had told him he was not enjoying the cruise and didn’t want to be alone as he was celebrating his birthday all week.
Makes me wonder if this might have been more of an accident under a “black out” as the guy wrote that Kenneth seemed very drunk.
I hope that guy who was with him at Blaze night club contacts Kenneth’s family (their information is also on the Atlantis alumni web site.)
It really is so sad to hear this, no matter how or why he died. Tragic indeed, especially for his family. My prayers are with them in their loss.

@CBRad: What a stupid thing to say!

Some of the comments about this are so vicious I find them repulsive. The guy was 1st officer of a 777 crew. He was on the trip for his birthday. Get a life guys and have a little empathy for other people. Geeez

It’s so sad, Kenny used to be a barman in my local gay bar in Bournemouth several years ago and was a well known face on the gay scene. My thoughts are with his family at this time.
Bournemouth
Everyone in Bournemouth are completely in shock, very nice lad, who worked for many years in local gay pub, will be very missed by all!! Our thoughts are with all you loved one!!

@Gigi: Why, and how, is that stupid ?! I have a lot of sympathy for him, but…at the same time…people should know better sometimes. I can be critical without actually blaming him.
BubbasBack
He looks like Jack Coleman from the old “Dynasty” days. Burp.
