Set in the early 1990s and written by the late Jonathan Larson, the musical Rent is the story of New Yorkers struggling with love, lust, and making rent against the backdrop of the HIV/AIDS epidemic raging through the city and gay community. It went on to win a Tony and the Pulitzer Prize and was made into a 2005 film starring Anthony Rapp and directed by Christopher Columbus.
