A vintage photo of unknown origin shows two shirtless military guys, dancing chest to chest and cheek to cheek. The touching pic has been making the rounds on social media, but there’s no consensus on who or where the guys were.
An Imgur user claimed they’re military conscripts dancing in Sweden in 1955.
An eBay seller, meanwhile, listed the snapshot as a photo of “1940s Army buddies dancing.”

How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Regardless of the photo’s origin, it’s been making Reddit users’ days a little brighter.
“I love how happy they look together,” one wrote.
“They look so content,” said another. “A blessed picture on the Internet.”
A third commented, “Everybody just wants some warmth in dark times. This is an awesome photo.”

This period of this was a global war. People were killing each other virtually on a daily basis so any opportunity for fun or tenderness or happy times must have been precious and special. I can’t imagine what it was like back then during that time but let’s celebrate this happy photo for what it was!

There was no global war in 1955. The Cold War did put Soviet and American troops in a continuous round of drafting men for military service but there were no global hostilities in 1955. Nonetheless, how great that the guys in the photo were enjoying the moment.

I served during Vietnam and many might be surprised at the number of “sweet” moments that occurred, especially in combat zones near the battlefield.

As touching as this is, not a big deal. I was in late 60’s to early 70’s…We did this same thing all the time.

My oldest brother, Dean, was an officer in the Army during WWII. He said to me that one of the greatest advances for the Gay Community, was when Paris was liberated there were men dancing together everywhere. It was the moment that Billy from the corn fields of Iowa realized that he was not the only one who liked stick shifts as it were. That there were others from all over the world just like him. France, England, Ireland, Holland, you name it. He was not alone anymore. And it was that that started the coming out of the closet for gays. Sure there was a lot of discrimination, but no longer could he be told that he was a kink in the fabric of mankind. He now knew better; he had seen it with his own eyes. And who knows maybe even indulged.

I’ve looked through thousands of these and collect actual vintage photos of gay images. The mass majority that are said to be “gay romance” photos are usually family members and military guys having fun simply because a camera is nearby. This one appears to be the latter. There is a certain vibe that comes from the real ones. This one doesn’t have that. Their friend is amused by the spectacle. The real ones are beautiful (and sometimes naughty) because it was a very risky thing to photograph back then. All film had to go to some kind of darkroom photo lab in those days. Many were later thrown out by a relative when the person died. So the ones that survive are a great thing.

Good work, Valentino. Keep it up!

Thank you the voice of reason at last . I am proudly gay but that’s no reason make these assumptions when I was young it was the norm to accuse Uncle Tom Cobley and all of being gay could it be that we haven’t changed lets not confuse good old heterosexual friendship and goofing around with something else

It’s a cute picture but I believe people are reading way to much into it. Chances are these are simply two Soldiers fooling around in a funny way to relieve boredom. After nine years in the Army, I lost count of the number of times Soldiers played “grab ass”, which is an all-encompassing term for pretending to be gay for laughs. And as the picture seems to be from the 40s/50s we also need to take into context the societal norms and mores in place during those periods. While homosexuality was, for the most part, universally condemned in the west there were different standards and rules pertaining to non-sexual physical contact between men. What we might see as gay by today’s standards might not be true for the period in which this picture was taken.
