“Six in 10 Americans say the government should not regulate whether gays and lesbians can marry the people they choose, a survey finds. As same-sex couples line up to get marriage licenses in California on June 17, the USA Today/Gallup Poll found that 63% of adults say same-sex marriage is “strictly a private decision” between two people. That the government has the right “to prohibit or allow” such marriages was stated by 33%, and 4% had no opinion.” [USA Today]

Also in USAToday, it says the CA Supreme Ct will not stay its decision on gay marriage until after the Nov. elections. Gay marriage is ON in California!!!

Let’s hope that these findings don’t lead proponents of same-sex marriage rights to get complacent. We need to fight this like we’re going in at a severe disadvantage.

I find those results fairly hard to believe ….
el polacko
they couldn’t possibly have been polling in all the states that have passed constitutional amendments banning equal marriage rights. 6 out of 10 ?? don’t believe it.
i’m not much of a conspiracy buff, but some of these recent polls seem as though they may be planted to, as fredo points out, make us complacent about the pending initiative here in california.
the big question right now is, how can an amendment limiting rights to one group possibly fly as long as there is an equal protection clause in the state constitution ? the initiative should not qualify for the ballot regardless of how many signatures were collected.
fredo777
El, that’s something I was also wondering (about the signatures collected being sufficient). Also, which I’m not saying I’ve proven to be valid, I heard mention that some of the signatures collected weren’t even from Cali. residents. Wtf?
Michelle
I’ve heard the same about signers not being California residents… it makes you wonder what the process is for the secretary of state’s election board when it comes to counting and validating the signatures/ residences…?

Look at the wording of the questions, gang. It doesn’t really say what it appears to say. 63% say marriage is private. Fine. So does this mean the government should or should not be involved? Acknowledge it or forbid it? You can draw either conclusion from any of the questions.
fredo777
Exactly.

Hisurfer is right–its all about wording. Pollsters can get whatever numbers they need if they phrase the question the right way. We WANT the government to regulate our marriages–just like they do straights.
