Nicholas Petricca, lead singer of the rock band Walk the Moon, has revealed he is bisexual in a post commemorating pride season.
Petricca, who lends his vocals to the popular songs “One Foot,” “Shut Up and Dance,” and “Anna Sun,” shared his story via Instagram.
“Hi, my name is Nicholas, I’m the lead singer of a band called Walk the Moon, and I’m bisexual,” Petricca declared in the video. “Today is the last day of Pride Month here in the year 2020 and I think it’s time that I said that.”
“My whole life I have passed for a ‘normal person’ – a cisgender straight guy – and this has afforded me a life of privilege,” Petricca admits. “Virtually no name-calling or bullying or hardship around my sexuality really at all. My heart is with so many LGBTQ+ human beings who have had a much more challenging experience than I have. My heart is with so many LGBTQ+ human beings who have had a much more challenging experience than I have.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.

Petricca then invoked the words of Harvey Milk to encourage others to come out as well. “I believe in what Harvey Milk said… (I’m paraphrasing) that when the collective as a whole, when people as a whole realize that we are everywhere; that we are your children, that we are your mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters; that we have been with you and among you and are you and have been this whole time. That’s the moment when the myths, the bullying, and the inequality will end.”
Petricca then went on to affirm that LGBTQ people everywhere are loved, whether they’ve ever acted on their feelings or not. “I hope you have the best year of your life. I love you, and happy f*cking pride,” he concluded.
Though he didn’t make a point of mentioning, Petricca also wore a Wizard of Oz t-shirt while recording the video. Any friend of Dorothy is a friend of ours.

I have no idea who he or his band is. But it was a fairly classy “coming out”. He resisted using being supposedly “straight passing” as a way to indulge self-pity. While he didn’t turn his post into being about how special and unique and “un-gay” bi identifying guys are. He made it about self-comfort, honesty, being yourself, people supporting one another and being okay with wherever you are in the gender, romantic, sexual, affection, emotional investment, relationship contentment spectrum. Hopefully he won’t become messy, defensive and/or attention whoring in the future. Could have left out the Jesus shoutout but oh well.

Shut up and dance was in international hit, top 10 in the USA, Uk and all over Europe.
Not bad for an indie band
Donston
I looked the song up. I can vaguely recall hearing it a couple of times some years ago.
jjose712
Probably because you don’t listen pop music. The song was top 10 on the billboard hot 100 and on the pop charts (airplay), and number one on the alternative charts.
It was huge even in Spain and Portugal (where it’s not that common that indie songs hit the airwaves)
Donston
I’m guessing its popularity was less long lasting in the US and it was less omnipresent here. But that is around the time I started moving away from pop radio.
Blue Zoo
@Donston – The song was huge in the USA. I’m 52 years old, I don’t listen to pop music, I live in Texas, and I can sing along with that song.

Get over yourself. It’s the 21st Century

Bisexual? yeah right. Total queen!!!
Donston
You can be a total “queen” and still be inherently bi. In fact, some “queens” are more sexually hetero-leaning. Yes, I am tired of these guys talking about how “straight passing” they are when it’s obvious that they’re “queer” in whatever ways. Just because nobody teased you or asked you questions doesn’t mean folks didn’t view you as suspect. I’m also tired of guys who know that they have overall homo or hetero romantic, sexual, affection, emotional, relationship leanings and ambitions hiding behind “bi” or identity in general rather than truly expressing and revealing themselves and their dimensions and being legit unembarrassed. But it was a respectful and refreshingly non self-pitying “coming out”. And ultimately everybody is different and has their own struggles and journeys. Move on from the bitter.

Meh…….He looks better as a bleached blond.@ShiningSex…it’s ok baby. Ain’t nobody pressed about this man. Plenty of beautiful gay men like yourself to go around.

I’m really decided to ask people to drop the BTQ+2SP from our group of LG. It’s getting too confusing for us, the people who support us, and the kids who don’t know who to go to for support anymore.
jayceecook
It’s actually not that confusing unless you believe that people are only straight or gay.
And if it’s “too confusing” and “…kids who don’t know who to go to for support anymore” blame the Ls and the Gs. Your own prejudices, discrimination, and denial of the BQ+ identity and people would be to blame. Been that way for decades. Some of the most egregious erasures of non hetero and homo sexualities has been from the Ls and the Gs.
Donston
Jayceecook, I would argue that most of the “erasing” has been self-erasing. There are some who can’t deal with how vast and varied sexuality and the orientation spectrum is. But many public figures have complicated the issues. Guys like Ricky Martin, Neil Patrick Harris, George Michael embraced being seen as “gay” despite admitting to not being homo. I’d guess around 50% of “gay” public figures aren’t actually homo or hasn’t always been inherently homo. Some folks distinguish straight from hetero and gay from homo, but many don’t let folks know that they have that perspective. While most people assume that a guy who becomes comfortable with a gay identity as he gets older has always been inherently homo, because many still don’t believe in the validity of fluidity. A lot of guys in general still seem petrified to keep it real concerning their dimensions, struggles, traumas and journeys. So, they become dependent entirely on identity, sociology, presented behaviors and cliche phrases, which can make them come off insincere.
You may be annoyed with it, but this stuff is why I am borderline anti labels. It’s why I preach obtaining genuine self-comfort and being real about your nuances. It’s why I talk so much about the gender, sexual, romantic, emotional investment, relationship contentment spectrum. There’s a lot of ignorance, confusion, shame, internalized phobias and social/political/money/ego driven personas out here. Your story can’t be “erased” if your are truly upfront and keep it 100. Merely pushing identity and cliches don’t solve these issues. But too many people have become comfortable with sticking with that route, which does not assist understanding and authenticity.

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME!!!!!

While I’m glad he finally decided to openly address his sexuality this isn’t a surprise for most of the band’s fans. When they were promoting their last album he talked about it more vaguely.
The band kind of disappeared for a bit after having some success and they went years without releasing new music. When doing interviews and asked about what happened they talked about all the personal changes the members went through that kept them from getting together to make music. One of the things Nicholas mentioned was that he went and spent time exploring his sexuality. At the time he never went into details but it wasn’t hard to put two and two together.
Good for him and phuck all these shiteheads here. Nobody has the right to police anybody’s sexuality or subject it to virtual armchair psychobabble.
skeldare
He never exactly hid it on his social media before.
Raphael
Good that he addressed publicly, but he never hid it. He even dated Morgxn… Everyone knew. However, he should be more honest in his songs, as they are all about women.
jayceecook
Did he actually date Morgxn? I always thought that was a rumour based on the fact they were in a music video together.

Walk the Moon. Land on Uranus.

I guess haters gonna hate and bitches gonna bitch.

Dude’s gay. That’s cool, but I wish he would stop with the cheesy song. C’MON!
