Sam Scott Schiavo directed this homage to Un chant d’amour, Jean Genet’s classic homoerotic film from 1950, in which, two prisoners forge an intimate bond in the simple act of sharing a cigarette. The cinematography here is great, and actors Patrick Hollensteiner and Patrick Melech are pretty easy on the eyes.
Hope you didn’t give up smoking for Lent—this short will make you crave a cancer stick something fierce.

Not criticizing the film, but…as for Jean Genet, I’ve always thought he was overrated. Not much of a writer. He just had the right timing to beome an “outsider” criminal queer cult-figure.

Meh. Genet’s original is in a higher stratosphere. But it’s in black and white. So, it’s worthless, we are are supposed to believe.

Well, speaking of Genet, his texts require a bit of effort to read, though at the surface may seem shallow. Perhaps you should try Les Pompes Funebres, or Les Negres. Querelle de Brest with its brutal, almost cartoonish characters has some of the most poetic passages I ever read. But then again, de gustibus non disputandum est …
And film from 1950 is a piece of work.

I like the Fassbinder film version of “Querelle”, but…admittedly…for shallow reasons. It’s hokey, but hot.

The original is far superior. This looks like someone putting together a film for people with a smoking fetish, has no plot to it, and damn annoying music. It is not a homage at all.

ugh has the guy who made this even SEEN the origional, hes taken a claustrophobic film with some real erotic frisson and turned it into a bad cafe del mar back to mine vid
Nick
Sorry but that was pretty dull and lacking any eroticism.
