It looks like the Democratic Party’s cooking up something big for their September convention: the freedom to marry as a plank of the official party platform. But what exactly does that mean? Just how far are they going to go? Is Barack Obama going to have to gay-marry Joe Biden? And won’t somebody please think of the children?

“It looks like the Democratic Party’s cooking up something big for their September convention: the freedom to marry as a plank of the official party platform. But what exactly does that mean?” It means “the freedom to marry” is an official position of the Democratic party, so if you vote for a Democrat, you should assume he’ll support that unless he says otherwise. It’s a position our current president supports (after a few years of evolution – and my guess is that President Obama meant “evolation” to be an analogy to Darwin’s theory as politicians adapt to changing public attitudes.
From a practical standpoint, it doesn’t mean all that much unless the Republicans lose control of the House of Representatives. If Romney wins, his stated positions would seem to indicate a veto of a repeal of DOMA. Keep that in mind (and of course verify it over the next couple of months) when you vote. I’d also keep “Etch A Sketch” in mind – Romney will most likely say whatever he thinks will give him the most votes.
