WATCH: Barney Frank Looks Back On His Historic Coming Out

Retiring Rep. Barney Frank spoke with the Washington Post‘s Ed O’Keefe about disclosing his sexuality in 1987 and his advice for other out lawmakers. “When I decided to run, I said either you come out and become an activist and have a major role there or I run for Congress,” Frank said. “There was no way I could have been out and won. In the end I almost lost on suspicion.”

I wonder whatever happened to Stephen Gobie. (Barney’s young hustler pal in the ’80s, who involuntarily outed Barney.) He must be over 50 now. I’m imagining him as a bar back (that’s bar back, not “bareback”) in Key West or Palm Springs, still chasing after older guys with money?
