As the clock ticks on New York’s legislative session that’s yet to get a same-sex marriage bill in front of the State Senate, upstate celebrated gay pride. Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown, a parade supporter, joined the festivities — even though he’s one of these “civil unions are good enough” types. [Buffalo News, WIVB]

Civil marriage equality is very important but nondiscrimination law that includes gender identity and expression is vital. Being able to marry your same sex partner doesn’t help much when you can legally be fired when you tell your company that you need to transition. Having a marriage license won’t help you if your landlord throws you out of your home because you have changed your name and your appearance in order to relieve the desperate pain of being mismatched between mind and body. Call, write and fax your state senators about this then do it again tomorrow but when you do, please make sure not to forget mentioning S2406, Gender Expression Non Discrimination Act (GENDA), and how it’s vital for ALL gender variant people, femme gay men and butch lesbians included, to have this long overdue legal protection. Ask them to pass this as well as the marriage equality bill. Ask them to pass it first!
