Queen’s Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS complications in 1991, would have turned 65 on Sunday. (Above is the digital Google Doodle devoted to the flamboyant front man.) Contemporary performers from Katy Perry and Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins to My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way and fellow gay icon Miss Piggy recorded YouTube birthday greetings to the late, great performer.
Sadly, no one seemed to use this moment to speak about AIDS prevention—and it’s a little weird to wish happy birthday to someone who’s dead—but the kind sentiment is still appreciated.
If you want to honor Mercury, make a donation to the Mercury Phoenix Trust or participate in the Freddie For A Day program.

GREATEST SINGER EVER!!!!!

Some of the sites google sends you to after the doodle vid ends do mention that Freddie died of AIDS complications and where to donate to organizations like the Mercury Phoenix Trust. Definitely could be more coverage of it, though. People act like it’s a “yesteryear” disease.

The reason I gave Gaga a chance way back when is because she said Freddie was one of her idols.
LOL at the Katy Perry video, its like really bitch? How more fake can she get. She comes for a big christian homophobe family, if Freddie was ever mention in her childhood it would of been about how GAYs get AIDs and SPREAD it by UNSAFE sex. DISEASE.
Excuse me as I continue playing my copy of Singstar: Queen because I am awesome.

One moment, please: when, how, and why did Miss Piggy become a “gay icon”?
