Following their much-deserved win at the 2013 VMAs for “best video with social message,” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis delivered a stirring performance of their hit equality anthem “Same Love” with out vocalist Mary Lambert. Then boom! Out came Jennifer Hudson, who made a surprise appearance joining the trio for the end of the song that culminated in a sing-off between the two powerful female singers.
While accepting the MTV Moonman for the “Same Love” video, Lewis acknowledged the importance of the song’s lyrics.
“I’ll be honest, I really wanted to win the Best Rap Video, but this Moonman right here stands for a lot more,” he said. “I’ve been writing songs, since I was like 15 years old and out of every single song I have ever written, this is the most important record out of all of them. To watch this song, in the last year, spread across the world is a testament to what is happening right now in America on the forefront of equality. Gay rights are human rights, there is no separation.”

Mary Lambert doesn’t need fucking JHUD.
Sansacro
@Lazycrockett: Aw man, why the bad attitude. That was beautiful.
Nyruinz
@Lazycrockett:
Jhud got you pressed huh queen, you will deal!
skoc211
@Sansacro: I agree it was beautiful, but Lambert has been largely ignored throughout the “Same Love” success and this just feels like JHud was stealing her thunder during the biggest moment in Lambert’s career. Don’t get me wrong – I adore JHud – but this didn’t feel right to me.

While the MTV VMAs have been absurd for years since MTV does not play vids and it’s a popularity contest over awarding creative content, it’s cool to see Macklemore & Ryan Lewis perform “Same Love” on the show. While I don’t think it’s the best song, it was still cool to see this on such a major platform.

@jeff4justice:
That Miley Cyrus performance took the Vma’s to another level, watching her twerk on Robin Thicke made me cringe!
Brian
Miley Cyrus is gross and a fake gay advocate. I’m proud to say that Miley will never be my ally.
As for Macklemore, aren’t they a couple of closet cases? How on earth are they a sign of progress?
whatisthis
@Brian: Jesus Christ, you’re literally one of the most pessimistic people I’ve ever seen.
Red Meat
@whatisthis: What do you expect? He takes so much dick up his arse.
boring
I don’t need to watch a single frame of this to know it would make me cringe in utter embarrassment and disdain.
jeff4justice
@Nyruinz: LOL That set the heterosexual movement back a few years.
sfbeast
Wow, just watched this video. It was beautiful.
Snapper59
Miley Cyrus was hysterically awful. The camera shots of her “peers” reaction was priceless. They were sitting bored and looking away in embarrassment. I’m not talking about the gaggle of idiots the producers put in the first rows to jump up and down.
Deepdow
I actually liked Miley’s performance. I’m kind of shocked that she gets so much hate. I guess Troll Academy is in session ..
B Damion
I like Miley but, that performance was just messy. I watched for Lady Gaga and she gave me gaga. I am glad she is back. It was great seeing JT and the boys. over all the VMA’s should be a thing of the pass. No more VMA’s please MTV please.

Video has been disabled. Way to go Viacom International Inc. After all they were going to sell DVD copies of this.

I don’t mind seeing Miley push the envelope, but do it with class girl! What she did last night was ridiculous; raunchy; immature; disrespectful and trashy! She’s like a preacher’s kid.. DOING EVERYTHING NAUGHTY TO THE EXTREME just to let EVERYONE know she’s not a Disneykid ANYMORE!! T R A G I C
Really_000
The guy that raps in this is white? Geez they are getting good at this!
eigilvesti
what’s with the comments here? they’re so off topic.. ..
the song is sweet, simple, commercial, but sweet.. i think macklemore has good intentions.. it’s a tribute to his gay uncle and longtime boyfriend.. they’ve been together all his young life, so he grew up with gay male influence.
this is the next wave in gay rights.. gay is mainstream.
