Never content to rest on their laurels, awards darlings Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan have returned in their newest drama, the homoerotic love story Ammonite.
Written & directed by Francis Lee, who set all our loins afire and moistened our tear ducts with God’s Own Country, Ammonite follows the quiet life of Mary Anning (Winslet), a single maid obsessed with finding fossils and unable to pay her bills. A wealthy tourist offers to solve Mary’s problems by paying her to entertain his wife Charlotte (Ronan), a depressed if beautiful young woman. Mary agrees, and the two begin to form an unlikely bond that masks a deeper, more dangerous passion. Gemma Jones, James McArdle, Alec Secareanu and Fiona Shaw also star.
Ammonite would have had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, though COVID-19 stymied its showing. Instead, it will premiere as part of the virtual Toronto Film Festival, making the film available to a worldwide audience.
An official, worldwide release date will be announced at a later date.

This looks so much like Portrait of a Lady On Fire, which just came out last year.

Kind of. Though this one is partly inspired by the life of Mary Anning a very famous British palaeontologist. Both films were in their respective production stages around the same time. POALOF though finished extremely fast, like 38 days I think. So it was first out of the gate. It’s just a case of awkward timing.

Among other things: excellent poster.
