WATCH: Trixie Mattel covers Lana Del Rey, and the result is kinda awesome

Drag Race alum and folk singer Trixie Mattel just released the video for her newest single: a cover of Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games.”

The Mattel cover reimagines Del Rey’s mopey, melancholy pop ballad as an upbeat country tune, with Trixie adding extra twang via her autoharp and guitar. Mattel also uses the occasion to channel some of her favorite country artists, including Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton.

Last year, the release of the documentary Trixie Mattel: Moving Parts (which won the Queerty Award for Best Documentary), which offered a stark look into the woes of Mattel’s touring and live performances, following her win on Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The film also included a full folk-country soundtrack from the queen herself. The doc, which played the Tribeca Film Festival before landing on streaming services, elevated Mattel to a new level of fame.

How appropriate, then, that Trixie selected “Video Games” as her latest single release. The song and its accompanying video helped composer/singer Landa Del Rey shoot to megastardom back in 2011. The subsequent release of the song on Del Rey’s 2012 debut album Born to Die helped further cement her place as a major recording artist. (Subsequent criticism accusing Del Rey of faking her biography and undergoing extensive cosmetic surgery stymied her reputation, though the popularity of her music continues to endure).

Have a look and a listen. Frankly, we find it an even more enjoyable and innovative listen than the original track.
