God’s Own Country was one of the most acclaimed LGBTQ films of 2017. Josh O’Connor and Alec Secareanu star in the indy flick, which people are calling the British Brokeback Mountain but with a better ending and hotter sex scenes.

It’s about a young farm hand in northern England who drowns away his sorrows by binge drinking and having casual sex. His life is suddenly transformed after he meets a hot Romanian migrant worker.

This movie was not what I expected. The love story part is good, but there’s a lot of really gross farm stuff, which I’m going to have to edit out of my copy for repeat viewings.
ProfessorMoriarty
“Gross” as in animal husbandry and all that that entails?
am_psi
Yeah. Nobody’s here for that.

Am-psi you need to just watch porn as this is a beautifully made movie, and the tough landscape is one of the chief characters. The two guys are not beautiful Hollywood types. It’s not bathed in sunshine. The importance of the sex scenes, which I found far from steamy and not very sexy, is that it’s the only way the two guys can communicate for some time in their relationship. You want steamy watch French movie Stranger By The Lake, where there’s even a cum shot, but not a movie that is about loneliness, father son relationships, and battling the elements, including ones sexuality. There is a very touching moment when the father quietly says thank you to his son after years of difficulties because of the fathers illness. Oh and the movie has a happy ending!

I agree ptb2016. This is a real movie that sets the tone so well. Two gay dudes out there in that tough environment. For me this movie is way better than Strangers by the Lake.

Not only is it not gross but did you know that the actors had to spend some time working on farms prior to the beginning of production? Or that every scene in that movie was done by the actors themselves? There were no stand-ins. Removing that part is cutting out such an important aspect of these men and the lives they lead.
crowebobby
Not being unbelievably beautiful makes these guys so much sexier than some sanitized, homogenized and photo-shopped to buggery and back Hollywood stars are.

Maybe in a few years we’ll see it on the “gay channel” Logo instead of another re-run of “Mama’s Family”.

I’m quite surprised this film has been totally unmentioned as an award contender by Golden Globes and the Academy. I wonder if it’s because they wanted to promote “Call Me by Your Name” rather than divide the attention.
Kangol
It’s a British movie. Not sure how that factors in. It has been nominated for a BAFTA and other US and non-US awards, though, and has won a few of them.

So am I. I saw the film in November and thought it was incredible. Very raw, real and natural like the environment it is set in. A true independent art film to the core. Reminded me of Brokeback.
It played all over Britain so I assumed the distribution would be similar here. But at my local art house it barely played a week. I don’t know if it wasn’t publicized or what but obviously overshadowed by “Call Me by Your Name”. They’re two different type films but I think “God’s Country” is the superior one by far.
djmcgamester
Never watched “Call Me By Your Name”. It lacked appeal so me. So some adult guy bangs a teen boy just coming out. (Yes, I’m simplifying.) In God’s Own Country we watch a relationship between two men unfold, the twists it took and the final resolution that had me crying (happiness crying). It’s a great movie on its own terms, never mind the sexuality of the leads.

I’m SO desperate to see these steamy sex scenes. Because it’s impossible to find porn on the internet. IMPOSSIBLE. Thank you, Queerty, for providing this valuable pubic, er, public service.

This movie was not what I expected. The animal husbandry part was awesome, but the gay love story was gross.

Actually, I did click on the link to get a summary of the film. Now I have it, I’ll search for it soon.

God’s Own Country was a raw, poignant and very sophisticated masterpiece compared to Call My By You Name’s bi-sexual Jewish day care-rated film that targets a hetero audience.
djmcgamester
The sex scenes are the least interesting part of this movie. Sure, they were necessary, but not at all graphic. They fit into the storyline but the relationship itself was far and away the most powerful part of the movie.
