The two women who have more or less become the faces of the transgender rights movement finally met face to face last night when Laverne Cox attended a private screening of Caitlyn Jenner’s new E! docu-series, I Am Cait.
@caitlynjenner and I finally met in person at a special private advance screening of #IAmCait. #TransIsBeautiful #girlslikeus #caitlynjenner
Both Cox and Jenner had expressed wanting to meet one another, though the former Olympian did consult the Orange is the New Black actress prior to transitioning. “I was deeply moved by About Bruce and Caitlyn’s family’s very really struggle with this change and the deep love and devotion that they have for Caitlyn was deeply moving,” Cox told E!. “I cried many, many times watching it.” After the debut of Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover, Cox gave Jenner her tens via an epic Tumblr post, while bringing attention to the plight of less privileged trans individuals. Jenner in turn tweeted Cox her thanks for supporting her:
.@LaverneCox, you are fierce and fabulous! Your support means the world. Thank you for all that you do for the community. #TransIsBeautiful — Caitlyn Jenner (@Caitlyn_Jenner) June 18, 2015
Laverne also snuck in a group pic with Caitlyn and others who had attended the screening, including trans actresses Candis Cayne and Trace Lysett:
Fun with #girlslikeus tonight at the screening of #IAmCait @tracelysette @candiscayne @smartassjen @zackarydrucker #MimiMarks #TransIsBeautiful

I’m glad this happened, and that people aren’t forgetting how much of a pioneer Laverne Cox has been.
There are so many more pioneering trans and gender queer people, too, so I hope Queerty celebrates them as well.
Laverne Cox and Caitlin Jenner, keep up the great work!

Jenner is not a role-model and is NOT a gender-nonconformist. Rupaul is a non-conformist. Ellen Degeneres is a non-conformist. Saying that you are “the wrong gender” because you are a male with a penchant for stereotypically feminine things, is, in fact, the most extreme form of gender-conformism. When you attach stereotypes to a specific sex, you are abdicating to society’s gender expectations. If Jenner had stood there in that dress and long hair, and still referred to themselves as a man, THAT would have been awesome, badass and brave. That would have been showing gender stereotypes the middle finger. What this person promotes is not different at all from what Christian right-wingers tell gay kids at “conversion camps”: that if you’re a boy, there are certain interests you should and should NOT have. Conversion therapy and transgenderism both attempt the same thing: CONFORMITY, getting people to be “normal”, because obviously, if you like wearing dresses and make-up, you HAVE to be a woman. Conversion therapy tries to change the inside of gay kids while maintaining their body intact, transgenderism does the converse thing, it tries to change their outside, both physical and social, to “align” it with their interests. They are two sides of the same homophobic coin, except Transgendersim, with its mutilation and hormonal therapy, is by far the more dangerous of the two.

Jayj150, you certainly spend a lot of time writing up things that are incredibly stupid.

Both Laverne and Caitlyn are very likable and sensitive persons, but I’m with Jayj150 on this. Trans people do embrace the most stereotypical traits of the gender they aspire to be, and sometimes reduce femininity and masculinity to their most superficial aesthetics. Some of them – trans activists especially – also demonize true gender benders such as drag queens, and diagnose young feminine men and masculine women as transgendered in denial.

Jenner could careless about Cox. Jenner is goo, stupid rich, super out of touch with other people’s struggles in terms of social economic issues. While Cox actually has a job, Jenner just parades around in dresses and makeup expecting the world just to take notice because of the name. If Jenner wants to make a difference don’t vote republican!

@jayj150: I do think there should be more education about gender identify. Young men and women should realize that if they have masculine or feminine traits it doesn’t necessarily mean they are transgendered and/or should change their sex.
I also believe that there are some people who want to fully identify as one gender or the other and that they are being honest with themselves. There is nothing wrong with fully identifying as male or female whether you are transgendered or not or stereotypical or not.
jayj150
@barkomatic: You said “Young men and women should realize that if they have masculine or feminine traits it doesn’t necessarily mean they are transgendered and/or should change their sex.”. No, those young and women are not the problem. They are perfectly fine being gender-non-conformist. It’s society that should come to that realization, not kids, because it is society(including doctors) pushing them to change so they can be “normal”

My god! Enough with these guys already. Can we move on from the Jenner/Kardashian nightmare.

Note how both guys have long flowing hair. Why is it that when a man “transforms” to a woman, he grows his hair long?
Could it be that these men have a fetish for long hair?

I agree with you. Enough said.

@jayj150:
You’re conflating homosexuals with trans gendered people. Of course there are many gay men and women with qualities of their opposite sex – feminine men and manly women – who have no gender issues.
A transgender’s sexuality can be gay or straight, but it doesn’t change when they transition. Bruce was straight,so now as Caitlyn, she is lesbian, still attracted to women.
In the absence of understanding or compassion for the complexity and range of diversity humanity, the negativity, ignorance and absurd reasoning is off the charts.
Some people, when they transgender, adopt the far end of femininity or masculinity. Because Caitlyn and Laverne live in the spotlight of the entertainment world, of course they are going to embrace a glam look when featured in the media or at events. They likely dress and look more down to earth in their normal private lives.
It’s so crass to think Caitlyn made this drastic change just to get a TV show! But the show is a good vehicle to bring more understanding and acceptance. The exposure will help support others who are struggling with their gender-identity.
Having been in business of reality shows for so long,it’s not surprising she will have her own show. Sure,it’s a business, but there is also social benefit beyond the financial aspect. I just hope it’s more tasteful and a bit more high-minded than the intolerable Kardashian trash shows, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Caitlyn is the first example of successful lip augmentation that I’ve ever seen.

@Zenguy: Where is your understanding and support for gender-non-conforming people, particularly young kids who are being pushed by society to transition rather than being their non-conforming selves?. “Gender”, when used as a separate thing from ‘sex’, is nothing but stereotypes. There’s nothing in the behavior, interests, traits of a person that makes them inherently male or female. When you hear these people saying they’re really women because “they’ve always gravitated toward feminine things” , they are simply enforcing and validating those homophobic and misogynistic stereotypes. We should be telling kids to ACCEPT THEMSELVES FOR WHO THEY ARE: effeminate, butch, androgynous, long hair, short hair, whatever, we should teach them that it is NOT necessary to alter their body to be their true selves, that there is nothing to align. Transgenderism promotes the exact opposite of that: that if you have certain interests that are not typical of your sex, you need fixing and change: hormonal, surgical and social. There’s nothing keeping Jenner from having long hair, wearing dresses and changing their name to Caitlyn while still being a man, other than society’s gender expectations. Jenner and Cox COMPLIED instead of fighting back.

Wealthy men enjoy hanging out together. I wonder what Bruce and Roderick chat about in private. Maybe Bruce told Roderick all about Kim Howe. You know, the woman he killed on the roadway only months ago? The dead woman who loved animals and helped rescue stray dogs? The one who never gets mentioned in any of these celebrity puff pieces and who will never be handed an ESPY award?
And maybe Roderick shared some details on the video that he made celebrating the trans murderer of 13-year old Ebony Williams. Williams too is never mentioned in the media. Who cares about her? She wasn’t a celebrity and she wasn’t “transgender.” Cox understood that the values of the “trans community” mandated that she celebrate the murderer on video and forget the victim.

There’s nothing wrong with adults transitioning. However, i think it’s irresponsible for parents to let their children transition at a very young age. Some kids are merely confused and still immature to realize what they want or what they really are. I, for example, thought that i should have been a girl & was born with the wrong body when i was kid since i dislike sports and i like boys. Only when i matured to my teenage years did i realize that i wasn’t born with wrong body and it is perfectly fine for a boy to dislike sports and like other boys.
