Somebody said to me, ‘Look, no matter if [Dil was] a guy or a girl, if this guy was in love with you, why was his penis not erect?’ Of course the thing was, you wouldn’t be allowed an erect penis [on film]. You were allowed a penis, but not an erect penis. A lot of men will tell you, sadly, it isn’t always erect when it’s supposed to be [laughs], but anyway, that’s just a technicality. Most people were just shocked at the presence of the penis, not whether or not it was aroused.”
— Stephen Rea answers the pressing question while discussing the filming of the big reveal in 1992’s The Crying Game with Vulture

Asked no one, ever.

And to think I made it almost to 2015 without knowing there was a visible penis in “The Crying Game.”

I never really thought about it… I guess I attributed it to anxiety about the fact that his secret was about to be known.

Thet weren’t actually in the midst of love-making, were they, when the reveal occurred?

@petensfo: She thought he knew. He hit on her in a gay/cross dressing bar. I guess I assumed it was female hormones. Do males taking estrogen get erections? (Sorry if this is a rude question)

Coulda poked his eye?

Even for allowing the 23 years that have passed since the release of The Crying Game, Jaye Davidson looks NOTHING like his former self.
He went from a transwoman as Dil in 1992 to badass gay biker today. :-p

Well yeah. Can’t show that or it gets an automatic NC-17. (Or would have at the time anyway…probably still today, they’re notoriously unforgiving of stuff that isn’t plain old heterosexual in context.)

@hyhybt: That was one of the shockers in the film. Interestingly very few (no?) subsequent mainstream films have shown full frontal nudity involving a non-physically transitioned transperson.

When I saw “The Crying Game” in March 1993, I had just returned from living abroad for 4 years. The friend who took me to see the film had already seen it. I had never heard of it and know there was supposed to be “a big surprise” in it. The first time Dil appeared on screen, I whispered to my friend that I thought she was a man. My friend shushed me and repeated that she looked like a man. I didn’t know why he get telling me to be quiet. Apparently a lot of people the thought the film was all about “the big surprise”. I thought the point of the film was that true love can overcome anything, even gender.

It was a big deal for its time, so even soft was a big move. And it looked healthy – something guys often neglect. Using a top flight penis health cream (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) can help with penis odor, dry or flaky skin, redness, loss of sensation, etc.
