I’ve read your feedback on my participation with The Salvation Army USA, as an openly gay person whom just happens to also be a celebrity, I took the Salvation Army’s request to participate in their fundraiser as one step in the right direction towards equality. If we simply separate ourselves from those that we assume appose [sic] us or our beliefs then we will never make strides in the right direction. I applaud the Salvation Army’s symbolic handshake towards acceptance and would be foolish to not extend my hand in acceptance.”
— David Bromstad, host of HGTV’s Color Splash, in a message he posted to his Facebook page in response to criticism of his hosting an October 18 event for antigay thrift store chain Salvation Army

There is no assume about it, they do not like us and close down shops rather than work with us.
You’ve done it for the money and the PR, and nothing else.
hunterky
He misspelled oppose…and he’s still a douche.
AlanZ
You “applaud” them? They would be the first to load your sellout ass on the truck to the camps? They approached you because you have a name and the housewives get hot fantasizing about you. You were used David. Used. And you went right along with it. I guess blondes aren’t as dumb as brunettes.
AlanZ
I’m sure your HGTV “family” told you to do this. And you did because you saw how they stand with their “family” just ask Paula Deen!
Rickey
I have been offended first hand by the Salvation Army as a gay youth on the streets. They have made it publicly known they oppose all aspects of LGB&T life except the Church reform camps. This guy did this for the coins and nothing more!
ncman
Just who does this guy think he is, Elton John???
Jonty Coppersmith
Why? Because just as with politicians and some other celebrities money is more important than principles. He’s selling himself to the highest bidder.
Taliaferro
Interesting – apparently refusing the help and being public about his reasons would have less effect. The Salvation Army gets away with a great deal because people such as Bromstad make excuses for it. Oh, and you can bet that he agreed so he would reap the publicity. What a traitor. What scum. What a douche!
averageguy40
wow. If he chose to work with the Salvation Army, it’s his business. David, you can’t please all of the people, all of the time. If you did what is right for you, then so be it. I for one will still watch your shows. How sad that some of you seem so bitter.
AlanZ
You can also leave comments on his Facebook page people.
AlanZ
@averageguy40: I’m sure your not watching for his incredible art work. You and all those lonely horny housewives can watch I’m turning it off. Surprisingly enough that Food Network dumped Paula Deen because they are so PC and all but HGTV , same company you know, has no problem when it comes to him going to a homophobic hate filled organization.
Jawsch
It’s not our place to extend an olive branch in situations such as these. We are not and were not the ones participating in shameful behavior, they were.
They are the ones who need to extend an olive branch to us first in order to undo the misdeeds many of the branches within their organizations have committed.
I am saddened by his decision but it is just that, his decision. Sure he’s attractive but I don’t understand what that has to do with anything. Will I watch his show? Eh, I rarely see it on as it is. If I scroll by and see it, I’ll likely stop and see if it’s a show I want to watch. Other than that, won’t affect me.
truckproductions
Let’s be honest.. He’s working for them because he’s being paid.. It’s why all celebrities do things that seem unethical to the rest of us.. All of this talk about inroads with Salvation Army etc is absurd.. Do you really think he’s so dense that he believes his partnering with them will make them change their religious views? I think this is going to backfire on him..
crowebobby
No biggie, but “whom” is pretentious even when you use it correctly, which you haven’t done. I don’t think you should be brought up on crimes against humanity charges for working with the Sally Army; people misusing precious words like “whence” and “whom” just irritate me.
MK Ultra
Once again, an idiot gay gives an anti-gay organization a huge PR windfall in exchange for money and under the guise of “can’t we just be friends”.
GlitterKidder
Guess he can kiss his ‘Design Star’ goodbye. I hope the $ was worth it!
Larkin
@averageguy40: The Salvation Army literally calls for all gays to be put to death.
I’m not sure what planet you are on, but no, it is simply not a choice to work with some group who literally thinks you should be burned at the stake.
Geoff B
@Larkin: And game, set, match. I could live with a gaylebrity doing business with an entity not known for being gay friendly (even Barilla, Exxon, hell, even Chick Fil A), but JESUS H CHRIST, the most hateful entity this side of Westboro? What the hell is he thinking?
iMort
There will always be those who will condemn us and will foster hate. We must have laws to protect our civil rights. Some people and their ideas about us will never change but the law must change, until that time we remain 2nd class citizens. To care about SA and their politics is ridiculous and to care about a vain vapid little gay mannequin is absurd in the extreme.
Jake357
@crowebobby: Whom isn’t pretentious; it’s the objective. Simply because ignorance and laziness has taken over its neighborhood like invading trailer trash doesn’t mean it no longer belongs in town. Whom just needs to build a nice new place in the more affluent suburbs. He still used it incorrectly. Grammar aside, Bromstad sounds like an apologist, desperate to keep his fame and fortune.
balehead
Nice PC speak….it’s all about the money….and always will be…
Cam
He is no different than Elton John performing like a trained puppy for Rush Limbaugh.
jwrappaport
More shameless opportunism in the service of the all ‘ighty ‘ollar. Oh, I get it.
jwrappaport
@Jake357: Using “whom” as a subject is a lot like wearing a tux to KFC: it’s just wrong, and it ain’t classy.
Derek Williams
I am all for working with the enemy to help them get to know us and treat us less like the enemy. Standing aloof and not communicating at all is not going to get us anywhere.
If you’re openly gay and want to do battle by working with an organisation that proclaims its hatred for homosexuality, then you’re a brave person.
If the organisation starts to see how misplaced its hatred has been, so much the better.
Communication is the way forward, but that doesn’t mean dropping our standards in any way, nor acknowledging that there is a shred of truth in the religious basis for their hatred of homosexuality.

Man you guys are some serious “Bitter Queens”. Get over it. He’s been a bigger supporter of LGBT rights and equality issues then all you jealous gay boys. Apparently your jealousies have caused you to begin eating your own (no pun intended).
For all you nay sayers, you are the ultimate cause of why we haven’t progressed farther then we have. Can you say government shut down because two opposing parties refuse to negotiate towards the better cause.
Shame on you and I call upon you to look at what you’ve done to further our cause and compare it to what David has. If it’s simply bitching in a blog your worthless.
For the others that attack him personally without knowing him, as a gay man I’m disgusted by your actions. It’s personal attacks like these against those that help bridge the gap between acceptance and non-acceptance that continue to show us as a lesser race of human beings worthy of their scorn.
hunterky and those like him are the real douche bags. People like David whom are on the forefront of progress and change towards equality for all should be heralded as heroes.
Mike
Another traitor.

His design skills are subpar. I have seen color splash and they result is always an over the top confused mess
I’m guessing he does not get many referrals so it makes sense as to why he would whore himself out for money
Elloreigh
@crowebobby: Using words properly is not pretentious. Claiming it is – that’s pretentious.
Elloreigh
@crowebobby: That said, I will agree that “whom” was used incorrectly in the quoted statement.
Elloreigh
@Jawsch: “It’s not our place to extend an olive branch in situations such as these. We are not and were not the ones participating in shameful behavior, they were.”
Seconded.
Atldeuce
Next up on Color Splash, a hip new clubhouse for the KKK. Come on guys, it’s an olive branch and a start!
Gross. I have met him and his partner and he seemed nice, but once a fame whore, always a fame whore. If he had asked them to give money so that he could redecorate a teen shelter for homeless GLBTQ youth, that would have been different. This is just the Jill Zarin syndrome, i.e.,”PRINT MY NAME. PLEASE, I used to be famous.”
