You would be forgiven for not realizing that tonight, the OUTMusic Awards are going down in Manhattan at Webster Hall, because there has been, like, zero promotion for the event, which is really a NYC-centric thing pretending its a national awards show. But hey, it’s the only music awards show that LOGO can score the rights for!
Your hosts will be Noah’s Arc‘s and funny lady Kate Clinton — because Neil Patrick Harris cannot host every awards show. And also, he is expensive. But: Kevin Aviance and Deborah Harry will be there! He’s getting a Lifetime Achievement Award; she a Pillar Award.
And now before you think we’re just finding something else gay to crap on, honestly, we’re glad an event like the OUTMusic Awards even exist. (It’s been around since 2001, we think.) Because you think the Grammys are going to hand out statues for Outstanding Cabaret Song? Didn’t think so.
According to Facebook, 136 people have confirmed their attendance; 504 people aren’t going. But Adam Lambert is in New York City, so maybe he’ll drop in?
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.

He isn’t nominated for anything. Why would Adam Lambert show up to this if he isn’t even up for an award?
Taylor Siluwé
I’m going and I’m not nominated for shit. What kind of silly statement is that?
Rags 2 Riches
If he wanted to be nominated, he could’ve submitted like everyone else. A few years ago, Rufus Wainwright won some awards. Anyway I hope that a lot of people come. We’ll see. Webster Hall is quite a large space.
HSM
Adam was performing last night at the VEVO kickoff next to Lady Gaga. Apparently it was a big music shindig with all the major execs and folk like Bono, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent, Elvis Costello, John Mayer, Taylor Swift, etc. Don’t think this event was on his to-do list for the evening.
Amanda
Wow, easily the worst organized awards show I have ever attended. The liquor sponsor didn’t show, either did Kevin Aviance or Deborah Harry. What a joke. Adam Lambert would have left if he showed. The performances were nothing spectacular, some belonged in coffeeshops, while others were obviously friends of the producers. The technical difficulties through the whole show really made the evening unbearable. It’s a shame that this is the gay music show that represent our LGBT community.
RLS
Amanda is right. It really was quite the debacle. Laughable, even. I know a lot of people worked really hard, but they need to get it together if they want this to be an annual event.
Athena Reich
It was completely packed. Biggest attendance ever. Tons of press there from Village Voice, Go Mag, LOGO TV etc etc. Yes, it was totally disorganized and hilarious but it was so packed the organizers (who are all volunteers) were very overwhelmed. They did their best. I had 5 nominations and walked away with Best Outstanding Pop Song of the Year. Yeah! Last awards show was in Chicago. There were nominations and people last night from Saskatchewan, Chicago, LA etc. For more info on Outmusic go to http://www.OutMusic.com. It’s been around for awhile and is huge in the gay community, all across North America. The facebook attendance thing must have been just one person’s personal invite because there were way more than that last night, and I know that all of us nominees created our own facebook invite page. All the best and thanks so much to the volunteers who worked so hard and created an amazing attendance!

Sorry, can’t help myself.. but have to give you some proof. Just to show you it’s not solely a NY based event. From the nominees above:
(*) Stewed Tomatoes (FROM CHICAGO)
Ellen Rosner (CHICAGO)
Billie Myers (LA)
Heiskell (Knoxville, TN)
San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (NEED I SAY MORE?)
Christian Andreason (BELLAIRE, TX)
Scott Free (CHICAGO)
Kristi Martel (PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island)
Jeffrey Straker (Regina, SK, Canada)
Julie Clark (VA I think)
Jeffrey Altergott (CHICAGO)
Sir Ivan (FLORIDA)
Avi Wisnia (PHILLY)
and there were a few more Canadian nominees I meet last night but can’t remember everyone..
anyways.. i gotta get to the rest of my day – this is in no way complete but just a few people i pulled from the nomination list and where they are from. Yes, there are a lot of New Yorkers on the list as it is based here so more people know about it here. The way you get nominated is by submitting yourself. Anyone can submit. Yes, it is sad that there wasn’t EVEN MORE press (hell – how great would it be to be as big as AMA!) but I know the volunteers were pulling their hair out by the amount they worked to get the word out there. And getting it broadcast on LOGO is pretty great. It will be on in about 2.5 weeks. But still, the Village Voice, GO MAG etc. was there and that’s pretty great!
Yes, it was imperfect. And yes, it was awesome. 🙂

The Outmusic awards is an event thrown by an organization that requires the nominees to pay dues and be members of the organization to be nominated. Adam Lambert wouldn’t even be eligible for an award unless he shelled out cash to Outmusic.
When someone becomes the head of an LGBT music organization in order to promote their own non-existent music career and gets their friends to perform at their awards show, there is obviously a lack of perspective.
In theory Outmusic should be a great organization, but has become more of a platform for people who feel they have been slighted by the music industry because of their sexuality to promote their subpar music. Their lack of exposure has nothing to to do with their sexuality, but rather the fact that their music really just isn’t very good. The organization has the potential to be so much more, but unfortunately that is the reality.
There are many talented people in the LGBT music world who are not represented by this awards presentation. Unfortunately because those musicians didn’t give money to OutMusic, their music does not exist for the purposes of this extremly insular event. This event does not represent LGBT musicians in the broad sense at all.

@ no. 5 Amanda —
Kevin Aviance WAS there, because I interviewed him early in the evening in the VIP room, and took pictures. However, it was extremely behind schedule (and crowded, so introvert that I am, I left after the pre-show), and I don’t know if he actually performed.
@ no. 9 Athena Reich —
It WAS awesome, and I wish I had arrived later because I poop out extremely fast these days (the forty-something Taylor ain’t what he used to be). Another media outlet present in full force was Out IN Jersey Magazine (just FYI) 😉

Oh man. I volunteered last night helping the camera crew shoot for LOGO and well…it was a very long and interesting night…especially the marijuana smell filling up the space.
Kevin Aviance’s speech was touching. sure wish he would have given his speech earlier so that most of the egos in that room could have come down a notch.
I might post some red carpet pics later this week.

Thanx for forwarding that info. Pulling off an event of that magnitude is an incredible feat, and though it was flawed and may even be structurally flawed as an apparatus of rewarding true LGBT talent, still, it deserves its props for making it this far. I was an awesome affair, despite the difficulties.
@ no one in particular —
Maybe we should ALL become paying members and submit artists we believe have true talent instead of just sitting back whining and complaining about this or that. Together we can make it bigger and better next year. Ya think?
Quake
For a gay awards show you would think it would of been the most high classed since we all know gay people are great in throwing party’s and get togethers.
But this was just one epic fail of a show, maybe it can recover
R.F.
This was easily one of the most disorganized events I have ever attended. We showed up and were told to wait at one door if we were on a list and then made to scramble to another door and then told the list was at the first door! It was sad. I feel bad for the artists who really deserve their time to shine. As a professional event planner I beg you to reach out to me for assitance next year! [email protected]. You and your community deserve better.

Ok, enough of this crap. Every time Queerty does an article about some event etc… a bunch of people from that organization or event stop the page and post a bunch of comments.
Hey Taylor, do you really have the nerve to say that people should have to pay to join an organization before they can critisize it? Is that REALLY what you are saying? So I shouldn’t be allowed to critisize the Ugandan govt. for trying to pass laws to kill gays unless I’m a tax paying citizen of Uganda? Give it a rest.

Take a cold shower, Cam, and chill the @#%# out. I am NOT part of that organization. I merely suggested we try to help instead of idly criticize. If this is bad advise, then I defer to your obvious greater wisdom.

I don’t see any nominations for any of the great bands that are either gay or gay inclusive that have been coming out of the indie rock scene over the last few years. No Gossip, no Fischerspooner, no Scissor Sisters…. I don’t live under a rock and fairly proficient in new media and I’ve never heard of any of these people.

No, you did not suggest we help, you said that we should all become paying members instead of complaining about the organization. I didn’t see the show, don’t know about the organization so am not complaining about it. I’m complaining about your implication that nobody who isn’t paying to be part of something has the right to complain about it.

The Good, the Bad, and the TRUTH
Alright, I was there very early on in this event and helped promote it to various aspects of the LGBT Community.
I love this Athena chick, pointing out all the various parts of the country people were nominated from, but the IRONY is, the winners in almost every single category were NYC based. That therefore makes the original contention that this was a NYC-centric event, TRUE. Athena herself, NYC based.
The reality is, Out Music has not done a good enough job of marketing themselves nationally and worldwide. Their monthly open mics are only in…NYC. It only makes sense that most of their members, and voters would be from…NYC. Which is OK. But maybe they should rename it the NYC Out Music Awards as if that is where the majority of the voters are based, that’s the kind of results you’ll see.
Regardless, it IS a good cause, and it costs a mere $35 annually to join. Any queer music artist who repsects their peers and the concept of what the organization stands for, should join.
Now, as to the comment about it being “one of the most disorganized events I have ever attended”, TRUTH! That is 100% pure truth. There were script changes at 6 PM, including arguments amongst the Produiction staff about who should do what, very very late in the game. Scripts were being printed day of show. Everyone should have had scripts DAYS in advance at least.
As far as attendance, it was PACKED. This is true. VERY packed. Long lines at bar, lines for red carpet, lines to get in all the doors, and all seats were taken and balconies filled. It was a smash success fron an attendance perspective.
However it is TRUE that this was a very poorly planned event. However, being there as it unfolded, you can see how good it can be edited and sold to LOGO at a later time. When it was happening, it was quite well. But it was like attending any event that is taped for a DVD or something, there are large gaps of dead space and the problem is the Producers did not know how to handle that professionally. Had this been a LIVE broadcast event, they would have been in big trouble.
I’m reasonably confident this can turn out to be a really good looking one or two hour special on LOGO in February or so.
So, the OMA’s bit off more than they could chew. Hopefully, they will admit their faults, learn from them, and do it RIGHT next time. Not an epic fail in as much as epic learning experience.
Coeky said: “When someone becomes the head of an LGBT music organization in order to promote their own non-existent music career and gets their friends to perform at their awards show, there is obviously a lack of perspective.”
Now this was true. The Executive Director performed and was nominated for an award. A Production Coordinator managed an artist nominated for three awards, winnning one it was quite questionable if they even belonged in.
So yes, it was not perfect, it was a grand spectacle but it was light years ahead of what most “gay music” events end up being. They tried, and for the most part, pulled it off. Someone needs credit for that. The 2 hour event ended up being four. That happens. You live, and you learn. That’s THE TRUTH.

Thanks! Now that was informative. 🙂

I agree with almost all of these comments. I’m very proud of OutMusic for holding a fabulous award show that had packed attendance, full red carpet, lots of video interviews, great music downstairs and lots of celebrities and personalities abound.
That beind said, it was glacially paced and terribly unorganized. My favorite live music performances were the first two rock bands, the hip hop envoy and Nhojj. Reason being that the rockers and rappers were extremely high energy and got the crowd up on their feet, and Nhojj has an extremely beautiful voice that blew everyone away. And also the Man Tricks performance was wonderful, even though that was not music.
The rest of the performers put me to sleep with beautiful but slow and boring ballads. The show needs to be non-stop high energy, not a slow drizzle of coffee shop background music. This isn’t an open mic. Set-up for upcoming bands should happen behind the curtain as announcers are still talking up front. Background music CDs should be ready when the artists appear.
Also why was there no host on stage??? It was strange to have endless amounts of time with an empty stage and a disembodied voice floating from the rafters. Julie Goldman did an excellent job hosting the pre-show. She should’ve been on stage during the main show as well, cracking jokes and keeping up the energy levels the whole time.. If not her, then someone else with similar stage chops.
And let’s talk about the Hip Hop Evolution performance. Why did it only include two of the actual nominees then three other random artists? And two of those artists didn’t even rap? If you want to throw an additional R&B showcase, then that’s fine, but don’t call it hip hop, and don’t snub the large amount of talented actual gay rappers who were in attendance that night.
And I second this quote:
“Now this was true. The Executive Director performed and was nominated for an award. A Production Coordinator managed an artist nominated for three awards, winnning one it was quite questionable if they even belonged in.”
That is juicy. The hip hop category featured four genuine rappers and one pop singer who submitted her song across almost all categories. It’s a very good song, but it definitely sounds much more like a pop song than an actual rap song.
A similar thing happened with the producer award.. To me, a producer is someone who produces music for multiple acts. Rachel Sage is an extremely talented singer and songwriter, but has she produced for other acts beside herself? All the other nominees have.
Sharon
I personally know an artist that is a member of Out Music and unfortunately, if you didn’t submit more than once (each submission fee was $25) then you weren’t in the final cut of nominations. She was nominated (She paid for 5 submissions) and her friend wasn’t (He paid for 2 submissions). That is NOT fair. I can go on and on with names of notable LGBT recording artists who are currently on the charts and were nowhere in site of a nomination – Fredric Ford, Adam Joseph, Cazwell, Sister Funk, Scissor Sisters, Lovari, Adam Lambert, Scottie Gage, Dan Manjovi, the list goes on and on. And even if the nomination process was honestly filtered – which I doubt – then why weren’t any of these artists presenting? They had cable access shows there presenting instead and in some cases, the same artist presenting multiple awards. I was there and while it was packed, I was asked to come by a friend of mine who said I could invite 5 other people for free. This was around 8PM. If I was asked to come for free, I’m sure others were well and fyi, I’m not in the entertainment business. The vodka sponsors were not there. My friend was a nominee and she told me that she had to wait on the line outside with everybody else! The most laughable part of the evening – when they read off a list of nominations for Best Choral Song – and all 5 were the same group – San Francisco Gay Man’s Chorus. What kind of awards has the same artist songs in the entire nomination by themselves????
Alejandro
This event was appalling. Not only for the lack of stage and event management, but also for the exclusion of the many people who have supported Out Music who were viciously snubbed and omitted – all because they didn’t hire a certain publicist and/or artist-manager! Out Music is NOT an organization that provides support or community for Out musicians. It ignored so many that it is obvious. It is only an organization the provides a twisted ego-trip for a select few who give money to a certain “Artist Management” for-profit company that illegally uses the Out Music 501c3 non-profit status. Shame on the founders for allowing this. Let us hope this event does not repeat itself.
Chris VonTanner
@Alejandro:
I was both an OMA 2009 nominee and an Out-of-towner and I really didn’t want to go here, but…
First, My hubby and I flew across country to NYC (we loved New York and it’s fab people, sights and art…art…art.)for the OUTMusic Awards 2009 and arrived at venue according to our schedule that was emailed to all nominees, at 5:30pm for the Red Carpet. We were not even on the guest list and the person asking for a name when we approached the Red Carpet, said ‘You’re not on the list, but I believe you, go ahead.’ That was quite a welcome to the OMAs. An hour or so later, the Red Carpet was ready and I did my walk, pose, lots of flashing and off to be interview by a very charming young man, that has never been posted, I guess because I am not famous enough. Only two very famous people were posted and neither of them a musician. I have to state at this point, that wherever my husband I go, whatever event we attend, we always have a great time. We remained positive and I got to meet some people I have know, internetly speaking, in person. Fabulous, Julie Goldman, Jon Gilbert Leavitt, Josh Zuckerman, Brian Wilbur Grundstrom, Phil Putnam, Scott Free and others. That was ‘good’ and where the power of this event was found for me. We had a ball. Sort of.
The music got to loud and the small media room too hot so we went upstairs because we thought the show was about to start. They wouldn’t let us in and at this point told us that the pre-show presentation was about to take place in the media room, where we just were and that that meant Julie Goldman was about to presaent half of the awards in this loud, dark, hot room and they, the organziers, forgot to order a microphone for her and her co-announcer. Kudos to Julie for keeping it together. My category came and went and I didn’t win, dah…that couldn’t ruin my evening. But after New Yorker after New Yorker all with same management co. that was on the OMA board of directors and helped put the show together won award after award…plus the hours between awards and music and yes…the announcer asking us if anybody was drunk yet, anybody had any drugs, anybody like to sleep/ What did he say? The reason I have hesitated on writing about this event was my fear that the musicians, the life and blood of OUTMusic would tink I was putting them down, like a sore loser thing or something and that is not the case at all. Do you really think I thought I was going to win? No, but my supportive family, my parents and my sister in particular thought it was important for us to be there and they completely surprised us with tickets, airline tickets, hotel, flights scheduled and paid for our entire trip. That was our biggest award we walked away with. When I got home, I was interviewed by a local Gay Rag and said at this point I would not suggest that other gay musicians give OUTMusic their time, money and support, because what I saw was a group of unorganized egos that are not about to give them the support back that they deserve. I do however, hope you folks in NYC can live and learn and right this thing. It had a long history that is on the verge of destruction and that may or may not be a bad thing.
in support of my LG…Gay…Gay…GayBT musicians and friends,
Chris VT
FYI there is so much to say and so little time to type…maybe more latter…let’s talk about the $.
