Actor Wilson Cruz, one of the first celebrities to call for a boycott of Equinox gyms, has taken to Twitter to share his fury. Following a request to cancel his membership, the gym has yet to respond.
The Star Trek: Discovery star became one of the first celebrities to call for an Equinox boycott over owner Stephen Ross’ decision to host an expensive fundraiser for Donald Trump. Ross and Trump have been friends for years.

However, with concern over Trump’s policies continuing to mount–especially over those pertaining to Latino people–Cruz called for a mass cancellation of gym memberships as part of a boycott of Ross owned businesses. Previous reports characterize panic among gym employees as members began mass cancellation of their memberships.

Cruz, however, still refuses to let Equinox off the hook. “Your tone-deaf response to this matter to a clientele you have betrayed is beyond the pale,” he said via tweet. “Don’t make me come in to an actual gym because an in-person meeting won’t be pretty. I’ve had more than enough of the posturing and obfuscation.” He also added, “Stephen Ross’ fundraiser for Trump, your delayed and ridiculous response, the excuses you have made for Mr. Ross to the public and your employees and the audacity of Trump and Ross to LAUGH about this issue are disgusting.”
Cruz also threatened to come into the gym to meet with employees should he not receive a response to his cancellation. “Don’t make me have to send another email and don’t make me have to come into the gym because an in-person meeting won’t be pretty.”

Why doesn’t the community and our allies (those with money) come together and offer to buy the guys shares? It would make more sense than trying to shut down companies he doesn’t have any operational control over.

This is also a good example of what corporations are allowed to get away with under Trump. When the Consumer Credit Protection agency hadn’t had it’s authority stripped away yet by Republicans, you could complain that a company was allowing you to do other actions online, such as paying your bill etc… but was requiring you to come in to cancel. They would reach out to the company and soon enough you’d get a call from the company where they would grudgingly admit that they could cancel you over the phone or online, they just didn’t want to before.
As for the boycott. The guy is a major investor, he founded the group that owns Equinox and SoulCycle and yes he does get profits from the companies.
Bigotry should be expensive and damaging to your business.

Wilson, NYC being what it is I wish you all the best in your boycott and I personally advise you to be careful of what you wish for. You see, the cost of living up there in NYC for most gay men is just as astronomical as it is for the strait crowd. If this particular franchise offers memberships for fifty or so dollars per month less than the other rip-off gyms then not only will your advice not be heeded but you may also end up getting read by a few of the members as they point out the same thing to you that I just did. Your voice is appreciated but the reality of today is what it is in the NYC area. Most young gay Chelsea dwellers would hang themselves before they’d face the fact that the YMCA is the only thing their three jobs will allow them to afford and would have to learn to be happy with that fact. Remember Wison, the question of “what gym do you go to” still comes up within the first ten sentences of a first meeting.

@ROBTWILO: I’ve made comments similar to yours on other threads recently, and they of course fall on deaf ears. They’d rather participate in ‘victimism’ and get on here and piss & moan, than to get away from the keyboard and go outside and interact with real people in the real world. What goes around comes around? Right wingers call for boycotts all the time – IDIOT. I never understand why liberals and progressives wrestle with boycotts. When was the last time an evangelical church donated to HRC? I don’t see Million Moms hosting fundraisers at the local gay bar. But the minute someone says something anti-trans-gay-women, etc., it’s “oh-can’t-boycott-free-speech nonsense.”
Grow a pair and spend your money where you want to – for whatever reason suits you. I’m dumping my Equinox membership and using the hundreds of dollars a month I’m saving to join a $40 a month gym and to support the LGBTQ archives.
