Winona Ryder Tried Warning America Mel Gibson Is a Giant Homophobic Racist, But You Wouldn’t Listen

You won’t find Winona Ryder singing the praises of Mel Gibson like a certain other Hollywood actress: Gibson has been openly “anti-Semitic and homophobic” for years, not just since his taped conversations were leaked. “Fifteen years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties, and he was really drunk,” Ryder tells GQ. “I was with my friend, who’s gay. [Gibson] made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about ‘oven dodgers,’ but I didn’t get it. I’d never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, ‘He’s anti-Semitic and he’s homophobic.’ No one believed me.” Well, you have hurt your own credibility since then, lady. But we’re sorry we didn’t listen!

    She is correct in the sense that Gibson is a homopphobic anti-Semite.

    Then again Ryder is a kleptomaniac homophobe so she’s hardly very reliable.

    Ms Ryder thinks it’s OK to use the expression ‘That’s so gay’ to mean ‘That is crap”

    Fuck you Winona Ryder.

  • Daez

    @SteveC: FFS, half the gay men I know use that saying as sort of a joke inside of the community. If it really offends you that much you need to get over yourself and become more comfortable with your sexuality.

    Mel Gibson, Mr “The passion of Christ”.What would Christ say about you being a big fat Racist, huh? Thank god the media called him out for his Racism. He even beat up his girlfriend.Jeez. I guess he messed with the wrong chick this time round! Chick destroyed him.

  • Fitz

    While it was only a small part, she was awesome in Black Swan! (basically playing herself, but wtf).

  • Cam

    @SteveC:

    There is also a difference between somebody doing that and what Mel Gibson did. The fact that she is publiclly speaking about this instead of trying to do what Jodie Foster is doind and going around saying what a great guy he is speaks volumes.

    As far as who is better for “The Gays” this round definitly goes to Ryder over Foster.

    @Daez:

    There’s a difference between gay people saying “that’s so gay” and non-gays. When gays say it, most are referring to something actually resembling a gay aesthetic or behavior.

    In contrast, when most straight people use “that’s so gay,” they mean it as a derogatory phrase: as in “weird,” “crappy,” “queer,” or “freaky.”

    Ryder, although not a virulent homophobe, still doesn’t understand that saying “that’s so gay” helps to entrench the notion that “gay” is the equivalent of something wrong.

    Winona Ryder is not a fucking homophobe, and the only people who think she is, are the tired queens on this site. Simply saying “that’s so gay” does not make her a homophobe, no matter how many times you say it does.

  • ~R~

    @Daez: I couldn’t agree with you more.

  • ~R~

    @Brett: If the phrase is offensive at all, it should not be said at all… regardless of who has ownership of it. This is not to say I buy into it. I’m gay and I say “That’s gay” when something is stupid. Ooops… time to turn in my homo-card. Personally, I think we are to thin skinned and yet we still act surprised when people seem more interested in coddeling us than actually treating us like equals. Lame.

  • Ajai

    ~R~, I guess you think you’re stupid?

  • Coffee&Chicory

    @~R~: too thin skinned? I’m thin skinned because I don’t let someone take advantage of my disadvantage by turning MY sexuality into an object of idiocy or stupidity or disgust or uncleanliness or boredom or whatever else seems to be bothering them. Fine, I’m thin skinned because I refuse to allow anyone to co-opt my identity and turn it into one of hatred, displeasure, and misunderstanding. I may be thin skinned but you’re just lying on the ground, encouraging society to walk all over your face.

  • ~R~

    @Ajai: hardly, sweetie… but thanks for playing.

  • ~R~

    @Coffee&Chicory: Haha… I struck a nerve, apparently. No, dear, I don’t lie down and let people walk all over me (usually, when I lie down it is for more… recreational activities) I just pick which battles I want to fight and what I’m not going to let get under my skin. Someone saying “that’s so gay” is one of those things that really does nothing to me. Perhaps it is because I was in a more ‘hardcore’ environment (note: not porn hahaha) for most of my adult life. I’ve heard much, much worse. My way of combating the really bad stuff: jokes. In my experience, nothing has disarmed (not literally, in case you wish to try this with someone wielding a baseball bat) big mean people faster than turning something they say against them… all in jest, of course. I dunno, perhaps I feel life is just too damn short to be a “negative nancy” over every little thing. I’m like a bible thumper in the way that I cherry pick what I’m willing to get me all riled up and foaming at the mouth (again, not literally, cuz, uh… yeah).

    End rant. ;P

  • Nightstalker

    Shoplifting doesn’t shred credibility. It cultivates it.

  • Daez

    @Coffee&Chicory: What you fail to recognize is that the English language is fluid and MULTIPLE words have MULTIPLE meanings.

    The word gay didn’t even always belong to us, so trying to keep someone else from co-opting it is futile.

  • Coffee&Chicory

    @Daez: not sure what you mean, as I am fully aware of this fact. I’m speaking about the co-opting of an idea. That’s what words and language are there for. I don’t entirely disagree that the task may be futile, but that’s certainly not going to stop me.

    @~R~: that is certainly fair. Excuse my rather curt accusation.

  • ewe

    I am sure a drunk ronald reagan and practicing alcholic george bush were no different than this toxic mel gibson.

  • jason

    Wynona, you’re a stupid bitch. You appear to be currying favor with the gay community after appearing in that homophobic movie calle The Dilemma with Vince Vaughn. We’re not going to fall for your little ploy, Wynona.

    Buzz off, girl. We’re sick of women currying favor with the gay community and then stabbing us in the back.

  • Soupy

    I never really understood what happened to her career. She seemed to make the transition from adolescent actress to adult. I know that she had some mental problems. But a shoplifting conviction? So many hollywood stars do so much worse and comeback in months.

  • Dino

    @Coffee&Chicory: You are too nice and intelligent to bother with the comments section of Queerty.

  • AdonisOfFire

    Fuck Mel Gibson!
    And by the way, Wynona was fabulous in Black Swan

  • Coffee&Chicory

    @Dino: aw shucks :P

  • alan brickman

    Thanks for bring the crazyshiz back Wynonna….just when you were doing so well…

  • Ash

    @Soupy: Exactly!

    I don’t get why they made such a big deal about her shoplifting. Was it bad? Yes. But, holy crap, look at all the other celebrities and what they’ve done. Doing drugs, hiring prostitutes, and threatening, beating up, and shooting their girlfriends. And that’s just Charlie Sheen!

    Winona just stole some clothes from some shop that charges way too much for them anyways.

  • Lucas

    Mel Gibson is Racist Fuck! He needs to crawl under some rock and disappear.

  • Sexy Rexy

    @SteveC: How is Ryder homophobic? Explain.
