You won’t find Winona Ryder singing the praises of Mel Gibson like a certain other Hollywood actress: Gibson has been openly “anti-Semitic and homophobic” for years, not just since his taped conversations were leaked. “Fifteen years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties, and he was really drunk,” Ryder tells GQ. “I was with my friend, who’s gay. [Gibson] made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about ‘oven dodgers,’ but I didn’t get it. I’d never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, ‘He’s anti-Semitic and he’s homophobic.’ No one believed me.” Well, you have hurt your own credibility since then, lady. But we’re sorry we didn’t listen!

There is also a difference between somebody doing that and what Mel Gibson did. The fact that she is publiclly speaking about this instead of trying to do what Jodie Foster is doind and going around saying what a great guy he is speaks volumes.

There’s a difference between gay people saying “that’s so gay” and non-gays. When gays say it, most are referring to something actually resembling a gay aesthetic or behavior.
In contrast, when most straight people use “that’s so gay,” they mean it as a derogatory phrase: as in “weird,” “crappy,” “queer,” or “freaky.”
Ryder, although not a virulent homophobe, still doesn’t understand that saying “that’s so gay” helps to entrench the notion that “gay” is the equivalent of something wrong.

No, dear, I don’t lie down and let people walk all over me (usually, when I lie down it is for more… recreational activities) I just pick which battles I want to fight and what I’m not going to let get under my skin. Someone saying “that’s so gay” is one of those things that really does nothing to me. Perhaps it is because I was in a more ‘hardcore’ environment (note: not porn hahaha) for most of my adult life. I’ve heard much, much worse. My way of combating the really bad stuff: jokes. In my experience, nothing has disarmed (not literally, in case you wish to try this with someone wielding a baseball bat) big mean people faster than turning something they say against them… all in jest, of course. I dunno, perhaps I feel life is just too damn short to be a “negative nancy” over every little thing. I’m like a bible thumper in the way that I cherry pick what I’m willing to get me all riled up and foaming at the mouth (again, not literally, cuz, uh… yeah).

The word gay didn’t even always belong to us, so trying to keep someone else from co-opting it is futile.
