Al Thaqafiya, the Yemeni magazine, isn’t even a gay rag. But authorities have shut down “the country’s only serious cultural magazine” (after all, it is government-funded) for publishing an article that describes homosexuality as “part and parcel of our society.” And like most controversies, it started with a movie. Egypt’s Heena Maysara, which features a lesbian love scene, was reviewed in the magazine, and was used by Paris-based critic Hamid Aqbi to call for nationwide gay rights.
