Headlining Wednesday’s fundraising event for American Foundation for Equal Rights, Elton John has agreed to perform a 90-minute set at the Beverly Hills estate of billionaire Ron Burkle (even if the press release did call him “Rob Burkle”). And so far it’s on track to raise the expected $2 million to pay Ted Olson and David Boies’ legal bills. As of yesterday, the tickets — which start at $1,000 per person and go way up from there — were “almost sold out.” (Of course saying tickets are almost sold out and you need to GET YOURS NOW!! is the oldest trick in a promoter’s book.) Rich gays like David Geffen and Ken Mehlman will be there, as will Barbra Streisand. But no blowies or handies in Ron’s bathroom, okay? That’s just rude.

You expecting GOProud to show up at this thing?

Elton’s looking more like Janet Reno all the time.
Dave
Boies and Olson should be doing this pro bono.
Each is a multi-millionaire. Boies runs one of the
most profitable firms in the world and is worth
tens of millions of dollars. Their firms do plenty
of pro bono legal work. There is no reason gays
should be socked for $2 million. We should be
raising money for 2012, when marriage or CUs will
be on the ballot in at least 2 and perhaps
as many as 5 states, with a fundraising burden of
anywhere from $15-100 million.
