Elton John On Anti-Glee Bands: ‘Lighten Up You Assholes’

“Lighten up guys, c’mon,” Elton John advises Kings Of Leon, who raised a big stink with Glee creator Ryan Murphy by refusing to let the show use its songs in an episode. (Murphy’s typical drama queen response: “Fuck you assholes.” Sounds like Elton.) “When someone wants to do your song, it’s a compliment,” says John. Holy crap has fatherhood reformed this biznitch!

      Yeah, right.

Elton John is in promotion mode, he just wants good publicity.

Yeah, I remember John earlier was attacking American gays for wanting marrige, basically saying gays over here were stupid….until HE couldn’t adopt a child because of his “Civil Partnership” then suddenly he becomes Mr. Gay Marriage advocate.

Oh and Elton, not everybody can sell their souls and perform like a trained monkey for antigay bigots like Rush Limbaugh, so maybe you should give the other bands a break…they just haven’t reached that level of cynicism yet.

      Cam, I like you.

Glee turns songs into novelty numbers, and I applaud artists for staying true to their work. Hey, Elton — can I release a polka version of “Candle in the Wind”? No? Asshole.

      Yeah! Elton John!
      He’s still relevant, isn’t he? :(

The problem I have is artists and producers that aggressively attack other artists just cause they don’t want Glee to do their music. So to Elton John….YOU LIGHTEN UP. It’s their music, they should be comfortable with saying if they want Glee using their music or not.

Elton John – the man who proudly sang at the wedding of Rush Limbaugh.

Elton John – the man who proudly performed a series of concerts in Apartheid era South Africa.

      The man is vile.

@RomanHans: Which “Candle in the Wind”? The Marilyn Monroe tribute, or the version where he changed the lyrics and repurposed it into a Princess Di tribute?

Elton hit the nail on the head. He hasn’t been more charismatic in a WHILE.

I can’t stomach Glee’s renditions. As for Elton, his voice has deteriorated so much, even the Glee versions are better than his.

Elton can say this because he’s one of the greatest songwriters of our time. He has so much material, he can afford to farm it out.
PS Darling, won’t you dump Bernie just once and let me write one?

Also, when he says there’s a “big debate” going on with “loads of bands” saying they don’t want Glee to cover their songs, afaik the only band that said no was Kings Of Leon – who are about as naff as Elton John anyway – so he’s just inventing something to react against in his desperate attempt to grab headlines and make money.

I still think Your Song is quite beautiful, though; so he’s got one up on most of the drears peddling muzak.

      @Lefty:
Foo Fighters refused to do Glee too, politely at first, and then quite angrily. But Dave Grohl made it very clear that they were angry because Ryan Murphy expected them to fall over themselves kissing his ass for offering them Glee. They politely declined, and then Murphy went off on them for being ungrateful assholes or something to that effect, and then they got angry and went on a rant about how bands are allowed to turn down TV shows, which is TRUE. Murphy feels entitled to an automatic yes from bands, and that’s ridiculous. Musicians might have many reasons to say no, and he (and we) should respect that, since THEY wrote the songs.
