Salt Lake’s Radio City Lounge Survived 61 Years of Drag Queens

Salt Lake City’s Radio City Lounge, or RC Lounge, was the oldest gay bar west of the Mississippi. And then it closed in August, marking the end of its 61-year history that began in 1948. Bartender Rose Carrier, who took the job not knowing it was a gay bar, and was there for the bar’s final night of pours, makes an unintentional joke about back doors, which we laughed at because we’re 12. It lightens the mood of this sad news. (Video via Utah’s Fox 13)

At least they had somewhere to go to somewhat be themselves. That really pulled at my heart strings watching that and imagining how it must have been. Seeing those cute pictures and then hearing how they had to sneak in the back door almost made me cry.

Heck, I live in TN and we’re not that far removed from those conditions even now.

I wonder what conditions will be like 50 years from now. We think we’re making progress, but are we? I surely hope so.
