Alaska Might Consider Gay Anti-Discrimation Laws In Hiring

From the state whose voters in 1998 banned same-sex marriages: “A proposed ordinance to ban discrimination against gays and lesbians in hiring, housing and education will be considered by the Anchorage Assembly next month. It would also ban discrimination against military veterans. … A public hearing on the measure is set for June 9. … State law does not explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual preference. But the Alaska Supreme Court ruled in 2005 that state employment benefits must be extended to the partners of gay state employees.” [Anchorage Daily News]

What’s the betting that Palin will veto?

Palin can’t veto it: this is a municipal ordinance, not a state law.

I understand your confusion, though, given the post’s title, which is wrong. Queerty: Alaska is considering no such thing. This is the Anchorage Assembly, & the ordinance if passed will only affect the Municipality of Anchorage.

We’ve had this battle twice before, once in 1975, once in 1992-93. Both times we initially won, then lost. This time I think we might be able to win & make it stick. Here’s hoping, anyway. I’ll be blogging about it extensively.
