The American Family Association issued a fatwah against the Campbell Soup Company over the weekend after the popular canned food manufacturer ran an ad in The Advocate featuring Chef Lea Forant and her partner Carolyn feeding their son Eli some soup made with Swanson chicken broth.
How did the AFA interpret the ad and its recipe for Butternut Squash Bisque? Their website reads:
“Campbell Soup Company has openly begun helping homosexual activists push their agenda. Not only did the ads cost Campbell’s a chunk of money, but they also sent a message that homosexual parents constitute a family and are worthy of support. They also gave their approval to the entire homosexual agenda.”
The entire homosexual agenda. That’s right, America: We’re here, we’re queer, we’re making you eat your vegetables.
Jack
‘…a chunk of money’?! Sophisticated folk, these Christians….
Michael
So wait. If “homosexual parents” don’t “constitute a family” then what is it called when 2 people are caring for a child? Sounds like a family to me. Is it supposed to be “homosexual parents with child” instead?

I used to work for the Campbell Soup hotline. I can only imagine what kind of calls those poor people are getting over this. People threw a fit when we had Carson Kressley as a spokesperson for some healthy goldfish crackers (Campbell’s own Pepperidge Farms). And when the the Rainbow Golfish came out, people actually called and asked if their kids were going to turn gay if they only ate the purple ones.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.

“…when the the Rainbow Golfish came out, people actually called and asked if their kids were going to turn gay if they only ate the purple ones…”
Please tell me you’re just kidding about this, Rebel.

Maybe butternut squash bisque was too powerful, perhaps she should have gone with some more classic, like cream of conservative.

@5 – I thought that was what Sen. Larry Craig’s “friends” got…

Furthermore, why was anyone in the American Family Association reading The Advocate? I could see a hissy fit (sort of) if this was in, say, Time Magazine. But the Advocate? Someone’s going to be sent to some therapy….
geoff
Homosexual parents do constitute a family and are worthy of support. The American Douchebag Association should worry about their own families and butt out of everyone elses. Seriously, if assholes like these would just mind their own business, the world would be a much better place.
Chris
Oh my God. Now the lesbians are FEEDING their children? What has the world come to?
Jaroslaw
Britscholar – I’m sure the AFA is reading the Advocate to see what is being said about them and they ran across this or, more obviously, to find something to complain about. I’m sure they have tons of closet cases, but reading the Advocate to see what your “enemies” are up to doesn’t prove your point.
Geoff- I heartily agree that a family can have many definitions but more to the point – someone should ask the AFA why they don’t support CHILDREN? There aren’t enough heterosexual families taking in children either through foster care or adoption. If this child has a LOVING family of any sort, one should call their bullsh*t and put them on the defensive of not wanting what is best for children…..

The American Family Association consistently “bites off it’s nose to spite it’s face.” They have a list on their website of companies who don’t “support family values,” when I think it’s quite the opposite. These companies DO support family values; just not AFA’s definition of family values; whatever, right-wing, religious, wingnut definition that might be! It’s evident that the AFA is on the wrong side of this issue, and they clearly do not care about the welfare of children or they would be fighting to support these children, in these loving family units. Just another instance of using the bible and God to preach intolerance and to push their “agenda.”
You would think the AFA would evolve at some point, but how can they when they are reading from an outdated book….*sigh*

Hmmmm…The AFA reminds me of other groups out there that make some outlandish decisions to get their names in the paper. Press is press whether it is good or bad. I am sure they will get some more “chunk of change” out of this one to keep their cause going for a while longer.

@BrianPrince:
Cream of Conservative. I love it.
Perhaps we could serve the Christians some Bullshit Bisque? lol
Craig H
You know what we all should do? Check out the AFA website, click on the link concerning Campbell’s soup, and find the link where you can send them an email. Delete all the stupid crap that is in the message to start with, and send them a message of your own praising them for their support of all types of families. đ Might look kinda f*cked up coming from the AFA website, and if it happens a lot, maybe they will stop putting the stupid boycott threats on their site to start with! OH YEAH!
Jaroslaw
Good idea Craig H – why not put in the link?
Carolyn Montgomery
Just want to thank you all for your cxomments and support. I am one of the Mommies depicted in the ad, and I can assure you that our Eli is much loved and pampered preschooler! You should have seen his Christmas loot…no child is more loved on the planet. It’s hard to believe that people could extract something bad from a photo of our family- obviously those people spend much of their time seeking the negative.
If you’re in the New York City area, stop by the cafe and share some good food and fellowship. We always welcome new friends.
All best

THese people are idiots. How many divorced or single/parent members do they have? AR ethey a family? They’re more twisted and perverted than anyon else.
I do have a problem with the use of fatwa. Complaining about something is dif than calling for someones death most likely by beheading

I linked to the pre-written email, deleted their garbage, and instead thanked Campbell Soup for the ads despite the malicious efforts of the AFA.
JakeinLA
I sent an email to Campbell from the AFA website to support their efforts. It’s funny that you can’t find a contact email address on the AFA website, or I would send the AFA an email as well.
Jaroslaw
I just sent an e-mail too from the AFA website – I just hope these crafty Christee Crazees don’t review them before they send them on to Campbell Soup Company!
gayinsf
thanks, Jaroslaw…

I particularly like the fact that the AFA website misspells the address of the company chairman as [email protected]. Does this means that all these delightful emails are in fact bouncing?
Charles J. Mueller
Sorry, but I think the position of the American Family Association is just so, er, um…soopid.
Charles J. Mueller
soupid?
Charles J. Mueller
This is a copy of my letter to Campbell Soup Company. I also sent a copy to the American Family Association.
Dear Mr. Conant,
Pay no mind to these “soupit” idiots.
First of all, what are the doing reading homosexual magazines?
Second, what business is it of theirs what we gays eat?
And, third, what business is it of theirs to tell you folks how to spend your advertising dollars.
These people are just out and out mind control freaks. Pay them no mind.
This 72 year old gay man has been purchasing and enjoying your products since my early childhood, as did my parents and all the gay people I know.
Keep up the good work. Hopefully, one day perhaps, homophobes like this will fade into oblivion. đ
Jeff
I do not really understand all these folks being upset at the AFA, that is what being in a democracy and a free-enterprise economic system,is all about. If they do not like it, they have the right to take whatever action they want, along as it is legal. You do not have to agree with it, but that’s America.
Chico
No worries…everyone…Obama will take care of this!!!!!…every family in the USA will have a can of Campbells soup along with there stimulis check ; )…MMM…MMM …Good ; )
