A Drag Race Holiday: Willam

GayCities New York Editor Jeffrey James Keyes snuck under the mistletoe with the contestants on the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race for a closer look at some of their favorite things.

Willam

Boy Name: Willam. As in “Will…umm…you close your legs, please?” All the best ones don’t change their names—RuPaul, Charles Busch, Joey Arias, Kevin Aviance, Leigh Bowery.

Current Home:
Los Angeles, CA

Favorite Place on Earth:
A sweaty gym watching my boyfriend’s gay basketball league.  There’s six feet of dick on his team alone.

Favorite Bar/Club:
Jumbo’s Clown Room—they have the best lesbian, C-section-scarred punk burlesque strippers in all of L.A. I learned how to “make it clap” there too.

What is it about your drag persona that helped you make the cut?  Being on television has been my job for the past ten years so doing RuPaul’s Drag Race is just about my own selfishness. I want RuPaul to tell me I’m pretty. After that, I’m cool.

Where will you be for New Year’s Eve? I’ll be working at MJ’s, which is the best place in L.A. to find dick dancers.

Why will you win RuPaul’s Drag Race?
Please refer to picture at right. Duh.

WILLAM – not WILLIAM. He even spelled it out for you in the interview. Duh.

This season seems to have more than its fair share of the more intelligent kind of queen: Willam, The Princess, Jiggly, Milan, Sharon, possibly Chad and Madame LaQueer, plus the sheer beauty of Alisa and Kenya. I see it coming down to Willam and Milan, though Ru’s difficulty in seeing through the one-dimensional beauty queens will definitely give Keny a fighting shot. Lashauwn seems like the obvious pick for first to go, though you never know what will happen in the first couple of challenges. In any case, looks to be a really solid cast.

Typing that all out makes me think we should have a pool or something, picking the order of elimination. Winner gets… something.

If you want to have a laugh this morning google “Tranny McGuyver” for a brilliant short film made by Willam. And yes it was made years ago before the GLAAD gestapo banned use of the word.

Willam was so good as Cherry Peck in “Nip/Tuck”. I can’t wait to see her on “Drag Race”. She and Sharon Needles are bound to be the stars of Season 4.

Much as I may have issues with ToTWK – Willam is a solid, funny, self-serving, queen and serves it with the right amount of sass and self-deprecation…. OK gimme my 20 bucks! ;) Bianca
