Boston sports radio station WEEI proved that even in Massachusetts, people are still making lame gay jokes. On news that the city was a candidate for the 2014 Gay Games, the station aired a fake promo that said super clever things like "The Gay Games flame is coming into the stadium. His name is Bruce and he’s from San Francisco" and "a 100-meter runner “loves to come from behind.†The whole "ad" is available online. [Outsports]

As a resident of Mass, a a frequent listener, I sent in an email complaining about it, and called in. The answer I got was "it was a joke, get over it" on the phone. nothing from email. That's one station I won't be listening to anymore.
His name is Bruce and he's from San Francisco
I've met five Bruces in my life and they were all straight. Anyone else?
If one of our own, such as Scott Thompson, would do a stand-up routine with those jokes in it they'd be funny, but context is everything. The jokes were not funny because they were used by boorish straight guys to denigrate gay guys.
Welcome to the world of sports radio. It is incessantly homophobic, racist, misogynistic, class-bashing hate spewed by ex-jocks and beer-swilling couch potatoes (which give beer-swilling couch potatoes like me a really, really bad name).
Around the country. In every city. Boston is no exception.
You should all read my daily sports briefs at http://www.gaysportsblog.com. Sorry for the self-promo there…
I'm offended more that those jokes were so painfully unfunny than I am about them being homophobic. If you are that unfunny…don't do comedy!
Even the homohating pig gets that MA is NOT "the gayest state in the nation," hence his building the "joke" around someone from SAN FRANCISCO which last time I looked was still in CALIFORNIA.
As the "LA Times" observed in October:
"No matter what voters decide this November on same-sex marriage, the election will not change one fact: Over the last decade, California has become the nation's leader in providing legal protections to gays and lesbians."
Last I read, MA's job discrimination, school bullying, and hate crime laws do not include "gender identity." CA's do.
Last I read, while gay adoption is possible in MA, a gay individual/couple can still be denied it simply because of being gay. Not true in CA.
And with the expectation that the CA Supreme Court will declare marriage to date still legal even if they let Prop 8 stand:
"More gay couples were married in California in the first three months that same-sex marriages were legal than were married in the first four years it was legal in Massachusetts."
What weak jokes! Does anyone even listen to terrestrial radio anymore anyway? Who cares?
Leland Frances chill out OK we do not need to get into my state is better then your state fight we need stand together as one
Hi Leland Frances fact is CA voted for GAY discrimination FACT and all those marriage could be void as a result FACT
Hey Frances P-Town has been gay sence the 1920's and for your info that is in MA not CA
I thought it was pretty funny. I laughed. We need to stop taking ourselves so seriously and start being able to to the humor in things. I don't think this was meant as an attack on gay people.
Listen- I would probably laugh too if I knew the jokes came from somewhere other than a place of hate. At least on shows like Opie & Anthony, you know that they'll bust on gays, but they will outright say they support gay marriage. All I have heard in serious conversations from these douches is hate, and sounds like they're reading script from Bill O'Reilly.
@Leland Frances: California's population is nearly 6 times the size of Massachusetts', which might explain why so many more couples were married in California.
Last week a popular Sports AM station in St. Louis, Team 1380 a famous shock talk show jock, Kevin Slaten was caught spreading his homophobic hate on the air. A prank caller called in the show [or perhaps his intern] with a clear effeminate voice. Rather thank cutting the caller, Mr Slaten took the opportunity to tell the caller, "You sound a little Gay," and "hey I don't like when the Gays call my show." He stoked the flames, by carrying on the prank phone call by asking, "what guys do you like?" It was just a notorious way for a typical shock jock pandering to his mostly homophobic audience. It was uncalled for and adds to the general hate tone in our already tense conservative city.
I spoke to the General Manager of the station and he promises to correct the matter. If he doesn't we plan to respond by calling every advertiser that pays for his show. Some of which are very queer friendly.
