Nepal’s Census Adds T Next to M and F

When Nepal — which really, really wants to attract your queer tourist dollars — counts up all its people in May, citizens will have an additional box then can check next to “male” and “female”: “transgender.”

      In a number of South Asian and South-East Asian countries, transgender persons and intersex persons are acknowledged parts of the community, and always have been. In those countries, transgender identity and intersex identity is more widely understood and known than homosexuality, which is often (mistakenly) seen as a foreign import.
