There’s a long tradition of servicemen asking their dream celebrity dates to attend their military balls, but you know how it usually works out with “scheduling problems” and all. That’s not the case with Steve Grand, who is a man of his word. The out entertainer was invited to attend this year’s Marine Corps Ball on the arm of U.S. Marine Tanner White and Grand said yes. Last night, the two men shaved, showered and saddled up for what Grand described on his Instagram account as a special night and noted that he was “honored to be in the company of some of our country’s finest.” Well done.

As a 58-year old gay man, who has lived from Stonewall through marriage equality, this story brought a bit of a tear to my eye. An openly gay male performer attends the Marine Tanner White Ball with a male marine is simply almost beyond what I would have ever dreamed of when I was an adolescent with a hidden copy of Playgirl between my mattresses. There are the big victories, like marriage equality, but the little things, like this, that seem to really strike home. My father was a DI in the Marines, took my mother to to this ball before they married. He was a football couch for the local JC time most of his working life. I was so scared to tell him I was gay, I waited until after college so at least that would be paid for. When I told my parents, they looked at me a little dumb founded and told me they’d known I was gay for years. They’d found the Playgirl when flipping the mattresses one afternoon. Dad set me up on a blind date with one of his gay football players. I had a very supportive family, but even I’ve been fired when an employer found out I was gay. Yet, today, even Marines are dating same sex. We truly have come a long ways.
Wish I had some event to ask Mr. Grand to accompany me to.

@drivendervish: Well, for about the first four and a half minutes that he’s been out, Gus has spent the time making sure that everyone sees his bare chest and bare ass many times over…..he dresses up in a Halloween costume (which I found no issues with at all) and posts a pic of it, then he pulls it down when he begins to feel the slightest bit of heat from the PC police and apologizes when he should’ve just stuck to his guns and told those who were offended to lighten up because it was Halloween, after all. I get the impression that he’s more about publicly showing that he’s a gay version of party boy Bode Miller, but who likes to tease with his body and show more skin than Bode did, to get his name into the headlines. Steve Grand gets his attention because of his musical talent, his charitable works and incredibly nice, awesome moments like his accepting this date to go to the Marine Corps Ball. So, yeah, I am bashing Gus a little, but I’m also suggesting that with a slight redirection away from just playing on his physical attributes and going heavy on showing skin, go deeper and show the substance of what Gus is about. Steve Grand in a tuxedo, a tailored suit or just a T-shirt and some nice, tight blue jeans is waaaaay hotter than a naked guy showing off his bare backside.

@zooby: Well Jeez, who pissed in your Wheaties? You may or may not like Steve Grand and you are certainly entitled to your opinion on that subject. But he does have fans which is obvious from all the positive comments here. The fact that he was willing to do this says something about his character. I will agree he is not an A-list celebrity but nonetheless he could have done nothing or turned this Marine down and he did not do so.
And as for his talents – he has had a successful career as a model and I have heard his music – he has a good voice and a good sense of how to present himself on video. He also apparently knows how to play the piano. Not to mention he has more of a sense of decency than the Biebs boy does.
