Should Cleve Jones Give Harvey Milk’s Bullhorn Back to the Students?

Harvey Milk gave Cleve Jones his famous bullhorn in the late 70s after winning a spot on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Cleve hung on to it for decades before giving it to the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, but took it back when Milk was made, and never returned it, because he’s safe-guarding it or something. Now the school wants it back, but Cleve says it’s his, and now everyone is pointing fingers!

Jones made tons of money with the AIDS quilt so why shouldn’t he hang on to this bullhorn? He waited until the quilt’s real creator, Joseph Durant, died and then he incorporated and made a small fortune. He gave the bullhorn to the Milk Academy so it is no longer his. With Jones, it was always “me me me”. He hasn’t changed. Most of his “fame” he got through other people.

I find it interesting that the same school in San Francisco, that bares the Harvey Milk moniker has been derelict in using my iconic
image of Harvey, without giving me my (c) photo credit. I originally gave them permission back in 2002, without charge as long as they did. Several years ago, when they updated their website… they failed to live up to their agreement. Several months ago they informed my lawyer, that they would, but as of today… they again have failed to do so.
For the history of that image of Harvey, with a bullhorn in one hand, and a candle in the other and a sign in the background SAVE OUR RIGHTS, and the following Frame that has my permission to be used at Queerty… take a peek at

thanks for posting this story. totally not interested in pointing fingers, but check out this recent protest (loud with kids chanting “save our schools”) at the corner of castro/market and tell me if you think it wouldn’t be more powerful if the principal — if the kids — were holding harvey’s bullhorn:

      thanks,

ps: jerry — sorry to hear your image was used without credit after you asked for it. a bunch of volunteers work tirelessly on (amongst many many other things) the web site at harveymilk.com — please let me know which image is yours and i’ll get the info to the people who are currently trying to revamp it.
really sorry you feel the school is derelict. it’s a great school and holds tons of hope, in many ways, for the future of civil rights.
      thanks,
      -m
