Are Democratic leaders throwing gays under the bus by not doing enough to fight California’s Proposition 8? Karen Ocamb says “yes:” “So while Obama and the Democratic Party say they stand for the principle of equality for all, when it comes to gay people — they appear to be sitting this one out. And if Prop 8 passes, their handprints will be on our backs — having pushed us under the proverbial bus.” [HuffPo]

what else is new! do you think i forgot it was clinton who signed the marriage protection act!
George
They have bigger battles to fight right now. There are about 20 issues I rank higher in importance to everyone (including gays) in our nation.
We gays are throwing ourselves under the bus. Until every gay person in America has donated a couple bucks to No on 8 or something similar, we have no place to complain.

Check out this article that offers some others to blame including, but not limited to, Ellen DeGeneres…

No. 2 – George:
This is an unfortunate view, George. There were slaves who ratted out other slaves and there were African Americans who did not support the civil rights movement. Does that make the cause of racial equality any less important? No.
Every LGBT person in the country doesn’t need to fight Prop 8 in order for the cause to be important. Think of all the homeless LGBT youth who have neither the resources nor the ability to contribute money or time. [Also, consider that there priorities might be a touch different. Perhaps the benefits of marriage are not as important as day to day living?] Think of the people (using a similar logic as yourself) who are not supporting the fight against Prop 8 because they don’t want the issue to interfere with the election.
I should think guaranteeing equal treatment under the law for all citizens is an immensely important matter that should rank with issues like the economy, Iraq and Afghanistan. The founding fathers saw fit to stress the importance of equality in the founding documents of the nation. Shouldn’t we be vigilant that those values are not compromised? How can we elect leaders to follow the values of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights when we can’t even claim they’re important? Gay rights are human rights, and the fight for equality affects EVERYONE. And it should be a paramount concern for progressives. Because it’s the right thing to do. Just because some aren’t supporting the fight for equality does not diminish its significance. In fact, I would use that to demonstrate just how urgent and important the fight really is. Imagine, people not believing it’s necessary to ensure everyone is given access to the principles of our nation!
[By the way, fighting for our civil rights does not mean we can’t also talk about other issues like the need for HOLC or single-payer health care. Indeed, electing someone who cannot handle multiple issues at once seems dangerous.]

Neither party is ours; not the jackass nor the elephant.
But the Dems are less evil, and that’s why they get my vote.
CHURCHILL-Y
Yay for Obama and the new DNC!
“We gays are throwing ourselves under the bus”
“we have no place to complain.”
“We gays are throwing ourselves under the bus”
“we have no place to complain.”
“We gays are throwing ourselves under the bus”
“we have no place to complain.”
Get used to it people, this is going to be the new mantra from Obama and his cronies.
The future sure looks bright!
CHURCHILL-Y
And thanks to Queerty for putting such a diminutive post. We can always count on them to give its due importance to the issues that most affect us, no matter which politicians are sticking it up our asses. Gay people first, partisanship second or third, that’s Queerty’s motto.

This, like all elections, will be about the lesser of two evils.
I’d love to be able to afford a “symbolic” gesture of not voting for either candidate or casting my ballot for a third party, but I know that would likely mean a McCain presidency + appointing of conservative justices to the Supreme Court (aside from the fact that I find Palin almost totally incompetent). As such, I cannot + will not vote for McCain/Palin.
I’m voting Obama/Biden, whom I still feel would be more beneficial to LGBT citizens than “Don’t Ask” McCain + “Tolerant” Palin.

Take away my toaster oven and castigate this liberal boy herein, but it’s a case of bad timing in my opinion. God yes I want marriage equality (but hell, where are all the marriageable men?!), but this year I feel the greater focus has to be on obtaining the white house, period. I feel for my CA brothers & sisters greatly, but I saw what happened here in Ohio when they trotted out the marriage amendment, made us a wedge issue, and we ended up with Bush for 4 years, AND a state constitutional amendment! I don’t want to see that kind of thing happen one more time. I honestly wish, for the sake of gay Californians, that they’d held off til after the election to legalize marriage. I think if Prop 8 had come up in a non-presidential election year there would have been no question that it would fail. Put a hot-button issue up in a presidential election year and ALL the conservative wingnuts hotfoot it to the polls. I want 8 to fail, bigtime, but I want CA to go Obama even more. People, there IS hope in the future, and the national tone, be it gay friendly or gay unfriendly, is set by the man in the white house.

Robert:
I agree with you mostly.
My only point was, sometimes you have to step up and do the work to save yourselves and not wait around for political leaders to come to your rescue.
I was just expressing my frustration that they are so behind in fundraising when there are millions of lgbt people in the country who have an interest in this.
Mr C
Why and how is Obama to blame for this? Then where is Bill and Hillary and the rest of the Dem part faithful. Have any of them donated to the cause?????
DAMN BLAME OBAMA for everything. But I guess that is right up the alley of that vitriol troll figure Chittyshitty-Y

Proposition 8 still may be defeated and if it is, we will may learn a new important lesson and that is that we do not have to sit around
and wait for either of them. I agree with Darth Paul in that its just
voting for the lesser of two evils, or the side that will do the least harm. This two party system sucks anyway. There is always just two choices. Its tiring actually and it makes for a system that no one with any real conviction. No one with any real willingness to step up to the plate and blaze a new trail is offered to us.
