A staffer at Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ office posted the comment “All faggots must die” on the gay blog Joe.My.God, something that was easily traced thanks to the user’s IP address and technological stupidity.
really?!

From a Georgia IT guy… post the IP address. The answer will be had in a few minutes.
Jeffree
Yeesh, talk about misuse of technology to make one’s true feelings known.
And Queeeeerty, can you perhaps mention Chambliss’ party affiliation and state, if that’s not too much to ask.
Someone tell me, please, if there’s an award that can be bestowed on someone so full of hate?
wompman
Jeffree there is an award for someone full of such hate. Usually they are awarded offices in the senate, congress or governers mansions. Once in a while they are awarded the title of president.

Re No 1: the article claims the IP address was one assigned to a geographical area that includes Chambliss’ office. It didn’t sound (at this point) like they have proof it was anyone using an IP address assigned to Chambliss’ office.
The article also claims, “The office of U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson is in the same area, on the opposite side of the interstate. A spokeswoman for Isakson, who is up for re-election, said his staff quickly ascertained that the message did not originate with them.”
That implies they have in fact only localized the address to a geographic area (an ISP would typically not provide any additional information without a subpoena), so it could have been from some random person who lived or worked nearby, even someone using a free WiFi connection at a coffee shop. Singling out a senator’s office given what it known sounds like an attempt by a news organization to spice up a story.

JMG says the ISP is the US Senate. If so, that pretty well lets out hotspots and local residents… though they now say it was Isakson’s office, not Chambliss’s.
If it’s whichever of them is up for reelection this year, I wonder very much whether this would help or hinder their chances of winning in this [language expunged].

OK, so you can’t edit your own comments on this site… after saying that, I saw that what I’d thought was an update was actually older information. Still, it could be either of them: after all, the only reason to say it was Chambliss’s office is that Isakson’s denied it faster.
Justin
@Jeffree: He’s a Republican from Georgia (shocking I know). He was elected in 2002.
Chambliss is a dick. He ousted a Democrat named Max Cleland who had both his legs and an arm blown off when he jumped on a grenade in Vietnam to protect the soldiers near him. Cleland voted no on the homeland security bill because it had a clause stripping the department of union protection and Chambliss put out ads saying Cleland didn’t care about our security due to that with Cleland’s picture superimposed onto ones of Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. The fact that ones of his staffers posted that doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Douchebags will be douchebags.
PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
@Justin: 100% Co-sign. The hatchet job his campaign did on Max Cleland was reprehensive. And yet he was elected after declaring triple amputee Cleland “unpatriotic”…………
Cam
The Atlanta Journal Constitution has said it has been traced to Senator Chambliss’s office and his office is cooperating.
Why is anybody surprised? Chambliss has been part of the group trying to make gays second class sub-humans with no rights. If you are fighting to dehumanize a group of people, please don’t pretend to be surprised when an impressionable staffer who works for you buys what you’re selling.
whatever
Obama and the Senate Dems are worse than that staffer. Republicans support gay rights.

Unless they use a tunnel to reach the Senate, it’s not likely that they would be using a Senate-assigned IP address – you don’t have a large enough block of IP addresses for that to make sense (you can’t put each individual’s IP address in the router tables as the table size would be unmanageable. I’d like to see JMG’s statement confirmed, or at least get the actual IP address in question.
