Because it’s always easier for you to be multiple administrations away from the Oval Office before you say honest, reasonable things, former President Jimmy Carter says in the “near future” America will be ready for a gay president. Maybe not, however, “in the next election,” so sorry Fred. You’re one election cycle too soon.

He was not a good executive but he is an amazing statesman.

It’s still sad that it is referred to as “dealing with the issue of gays”. For most of us, it’s like “what the hell is the issue”?
On The Road
The “issue” of homosexuality much like the “issue” of race that President Carter is talking about refers to the issues that some people have with race/sexual orientation and how these issues should be address. Race and sexual orientation are NOT the issue.
the joy
No. Jimmy Carter is a confused old man that supports the marxist, self-destructing, murderous corruption going on in South America. He may be right about this – he isn’t, America’s not quite ready yet – but he’s no prize.
McMike
America has already had an openly gay president via James Buchanan.

By the way, all you Habitat for Humanity fans… go check out their qualification list. Guess which kind of family they do NOT define as a family, and is therefor not eligible for their services? Hmm? I don’t care about anything else good he has done. A dirty homophobe is a dirty homophobe.
alan brickman
those out of power always say these things..
alan brickman
gays aren’t eligble for housing?…interesting…

Hmm, haven’t been able to find anything on Habitat for Humanity’s website that would preclude a gay couple from applying (or an unmarried straight couple, or even someone single). Does anyone have a link?
MickeyKidd
hmm, its sad realy how people talk and behave like they never had good parents, to teach them that people desrve the same repect and dignity that you should wont and have. i believe that you should never insult anyone even if they do it first for the cycle will never end unless you end it. so please use your heads and be nice and if you got nothin’ nice to say, then say nothin’ at all. pres. Carter, is an elderly man, can realy be comfortable with yourself insulting the elderly? and about anyone who is homophobic, c’mon please be nice! im nice to you! đ
ILoveDudes
Well, knowing Carter, I guess he’d prefer even a gay president to a Jew.

@Fitz: Guess which kind of family they do NOT define as a family, and is therefor not eligible for their services?
I suspect this varies with country. In South Africa gays and lesbians have equal rights (though there are still major problems, none of these are legal). Given percentages, it would be odd if they had not built a house for lesbians. There is an additional problem here — the sordid case of “corrective rape” where recognized lesbians are raped in order to show to them that male – female sex is desirable. Many lesbians prefer not to identified for such reasons. When we go to Male-male adoption, it is usually an upper middle class thing and doesn’t need support. I could be wrong, but I have yet to see Black African males form a union, let alone adopt children.
So what I am saying is that this complaint is highly theoretical, and I therefore suspect its motive in a political world.

I really wish that the country was ready for this, but right now a lot of the country is still having problems dealing with a black president. They don’t call that the reason they have problems with him, of course, but they do everything in their power to make it look like he’s worse than any other president. If there was a mainstream candidate for president who was out of the closet, we would see the most disgusting accusations from the religious right and I wouldn’t be surprised to see active plans for assassination attempts. The country has some growing up to do.

@ait10101: My motive is pretty simple: I believe in equal rights, and I believe in calling bigots on bigotry.
It’s not an abstract or theoretical problem. There is a myth that all the g/l families are upper middle class… poverty levels for queer people are pretty high too. There are a lot of re-formed families that are headed by 2 women or 2 men. About 3 years ago there was a big write up about this problem with Habitat in the chronical… I looked for the citation online, but can’t find it.. and need to let it go, but I will continue to be a thorn in the side of any bigoted person or organization. It’s part of my job on the planet.

@ILoveDudes: That’s why he didn’t endorse Fred Karger. Even if Fred were a Democrat, Mr. Peanut wouldn’t endorse him.
And it’s okay to insult the elderly if they were shitty presidents and are anti-semites. The GOP could have run Ronald McDonald against him in 1980 and won, never mind Ronald Reagan. And his fat, drunken loser brother was one 1970s Billy who had no trouble not being a hero, unlike that other one of AM radio infamy.
I don’t support Habitat for Humanity because of this epic failure’s involvement with it. I had no idea they forbade gay families from receiving their aid. If this is true then I am actively boycotting them as I do with the Salvation Army.
Americans are having trouble with a “black” president because he’s an incompetent, lazy, arrogant authoritarian megalomaniac. He and his stooges are the only ones talking about race.
I’m supporting Fred Karger in 2012, and will never cast another vote for a heterosexual, gentile, or Democrat for any public office as long as I live. I’d just as soon vote for a Communist, Fascist, or Nazi.
