Kevin Fret, widely regarded as the first openly gay Latin trap artist, died shortly after being shot in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The 24-year-old musician was reportedly shot while riding his motorcycle at 5:30 am local time and died at the hospital.
Fret’s manager, Eduardo Rodriguez said in an official statement:
“Kevin was an artistic soul, a big-hearted dreamer. His passion was music, and still had a lot to do. This violence must stop. There are no words that describe the feeling we have and the pain that causes us to know that a person with so many dreams has to go. We must all unite in these difficult times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico.”
Fret had just entered the spotlight with his April 2018 single “Soy Asi,” and had previously said one of his goals was to pave the way for other LGBTQ trap artists.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“I’m a person that doesn’t care what anybody has to say,” he told Paper Magazine in April. “[Now I see] young gay guys or young lesbians that are looking at me now like a role model, like wow, if he did it, and he don’t care what anybody else has to say, I can do it.”
Here’s Fret’s video for “Soy Asi”:

Forgive my ignorance but did ANY ONE notice the guns and tone of this video? Hey, when you praise certain things or look to that style for you bread and butter there are consequences/karma that accompany such lifestyle.

Bob, I was thinking the same thing. Not a fan of artists using misogyny (think Lou Bega) and weapons only as set pieces. Felt he was trying too hard to impress the “gansta” crowd. Though bedecked in sequins and glitter, the message I received was not very… impressive.
It is a shame that his life ended – perhaps he could have grown to be a Latin version of Cazwell.

Honey, what does Lou Bega have to do with this or could you explain why you used him as an example? I loved Mambo #5 and say no violence or anything close in the video.

Agreed. I also think we should move away from such culture of misogyny and violence and weapons (he threatens having his knives ready in the video). It’s stirring the pot among people who have live in a prison-like culture (we know hoe much life is worth in jail). Waving the ref flag. All a shame we live in such society
Thanks president for allowing this (he’s bs),

Waste of a life. I have no idea what trap music is, so I guess that makes me a fossil.

Yes, to all the comments posted so far. I’d not heard of him but would have been glad to know of his work. Hate the guns – what video director put them in his hands and why? The vid would have been just as impressive without them. And yes (or no), what is trap music? 24 – what a tragedy.
