Queen Latifah: Playing gay was a hard career choice to make

“When I got the role of amateur bank robber Cleo Sims in ‘Set It Off,’ I sat down with my younger siblings and told them, ‘Listen, I’m playing a gay character. Your classmates might tease you or say negative things about it.”

“’But I’m doing it because I believe I can bring positive attention to the gay African-American community, and I believe that I can do a great job as an actor.’ They understood, and when those things inevitably happened in school, they were OK with it.” —Queen Latifah, when asked by InStyle if there were any career decisions that were “particularly hard to make.”

    You mean playing herself?!?

    • Low Country Boy

      Thank you, Sir!!!

  • IDoNotHaveToAgreeWithYou

If you butch ass would come out, it would help the black gay community a lot more.

    • Giuseppe

      Yep!

  • ingyaom

“Playing gay”? I think you meant “being gay.”

  • Captain Obvious

Girl, stop. We saw you on that yacht all over another woman. You’ve been out for years now and you’re still the only one who doesn’t know it.

  • Brian S

Are you f***ing kidding me? Staying in the closet is one thing, but a closeted woman talking about how brave she is is revolting.

    • Giuseppe

      Agree 100%!

  • Hussain-TheCanadian

Someone needs to tell queen Latifa it’s 2017, bitch you don’t need to pretend no more.

  • Roan

Am I being obtuse? Isn’t she gay anyway?

  • Kangol

The absurdity of her comments is mindboggling. Latifah, you are a lesbian. You know, we know it, we’ve ALL known it for a long time! Look in the mirror, girl, and get a grip!

  • PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID

Entirely understandable. She wants to preserve her popular sex appeal with heterosexual men. They can’t get enough of her leatheclad delicate frame daintily perched atop a Harley Davidson.

    • mhoffman953

Huh? Maybe I’m out of the loop but I don’t think there are any straight guys fantasizing about Queen Latifah doing anything

    • Black Pegasus

@mhoffman953 – sarcasm clearly missed you.

    • mhoffman953

@BlackPegasus You never know on here anymore haha

  • DCguy

Ok, putting aside her ridiculous closet inspired comments….

IF you’ve ever seen “Set It Off” she did a great job in the role. I’ll give her that. Almost, TOO good a job, you know, like she knew what it was like to be a lesbian or something. ;)

  • Bob LaBlah

Love you as I do I unfortunately I think it is YOUR character on the Fox drama Star that is dragging down the show.

  • Low Country Boy

All good comments, but there is a common thread: Four out of five gay men agree — Latifah is gay (Ok, we all do).

  • JerseyMike

Biggest fking eye roll ever.. Bish please!! Seen her ass in different cities in jersey with tall chocolate basketball player types.. She has a type. No one cares if she comes out anymore but these stupid ass hypocritical interviews need to stop.. Fking Stevie Wonder can see she is gay.

  • anthony_jones

……Yeah because you were believable playing straight,

  • Donston

To some degree I semi, somewhat agree with her. It was the mid-90’s, masculine lesbians were hardly visible, and she was already contending with gay rumors. However, there’s no point of talking about it today without bringing it into the context of your own sexuality. It just sounds ridiculous.

  • MediaGuy

Latifa, the truth has a certain ring to it. So does bullshit. So, just stop it.
