Brianna Popour, a gay student at Chesnee High School in South Carolina, has been suspended after refusing to remove her “Nobody Knows I’m a Lesbian” T-shirt, reports WCBD 2 News.
Popour claims she wore it to encourage other students to come to terms with their sexuality, but was told to either change her outfit or go home.
When she pointed out that there was nothing in the school’s dress code that suggested there was anything wrong with the shirt, she was told by an administrator that “not everything is in the handbook” and that the the shirt was “disruptive.” Then she was suspended.
Brianna’s mother Barbara Popour says the move was discriminatory and is fighting back against the school.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“Isn’t that what school is supposed to teach you?” Brianna asked. “To be happy with who you are? Maybe people will be more comfortable showing who they are, because you should be able to wear what you want to wear.”
Ellen Kahn, director of the Children, Youth and Family Program at Human Rights Campaign Foundation, is strongly against the school’s decision and thinks it could be damaging to other gay students.
“It’s quite an extreme measure,” she told Dailymail.com. “I think the majority of school administrators and national organizations would tend to agree that it’s an extreme punitive reaction.”

Get the GD ACLU on this and sue for enough money to close the whole damn school district! This is getting old and asinine!
Giancarlo85
“Not everything is in the handbook”… Oh I see. Like Kim Davis, the school administrator is making up rules as he or she goes along. That’s what conservatives do best… they make shit up to silence other people they don’t like.
Billy Budd
SUE them to hell.
Alistair Wiseman
@Giancarlo85:
“That’s what conservatives do best… they make shit up to silence other people they don’t like.”
Who is making “shit up”? You are well aware that Kim Davis is not a Republican.
Dakotahgeo
@Alistair Wiseman: Oh Puleeease!!! Ms. Kimmyshit only ran as a Democrat because the Republicans wanted nothing to do with her and the Democrats got stuck with the tantrums and scapegoating of the bit*h!
Alistair Wiseman
The article states, “Isn’t that what school is suppose to teach you?” Brianna asked. “To be happy with who you are?”
Um…no. But I do see you are a victim of the failed, liberal and counterproductive self-esteem movement.
American schools were created to make better Americans. The decline of American education is real and disturbing. Compared to nearly all of American history, the average American school teaches much less about important subjects such as American history, English grammar, literature, music and art. Instead, schools are teaching much more about “social justice”, environmentalism and sex. (Anyone for a condom on a banana?)
Is it any wonder America is falling further and further behind in global testing standards.
Alistair Wiseman
@Dakotahgeo:
Interesting…and your source for this information?
(I think you just unintentionally made the Republicans look smart.)
Dakotahgeo
@Alistair Wiseman: Comment noted… dismissed!

I love to see our young gay daughters and sons show such self determination and bravery. I feel such hope for the future and that the younger generation won’t grow up to be the damaged adults so many members of our older generations are.
jwtraveler
I’m sure no one would object if she showed up wearing a Confederate flag t-shirt. White supremacy? Great! Gay Pride? “Disruptive”.

Alistair Wiseman, Blame Republicans for the lack of school funding, dreamer. They also squash “Head Start” programs.
Dakotahgeo
@1EqualityUSA: Thank you! Spot on the mark. Republicans know education equals power and their main goal is to keep everyone as stupid as they are!
Misty Bolling
I do not find any offense

@1EqualityUSA:
$8,598,095,000 was spent on Head Start in 2014.
927,275 participated in Head Start in 2014.
$9,272.00 approximate amount spent on each enrollee.
Republicans “squash” Head Start?
Hardly.
1EqualityUSA
Republicans Kill head start… google this and see how this has been going back and forth. For as long as I can remember these ReBiblicans have been trying to slash this. They’re like bug guts on a windshield, right in the line of vision. See how well this party of “no” is doing? I hope they never taste power again. Gerrymandering, cheating, and suppressing votes can only carry them so far. The damage is done.
1EqualityUSA
Union busting also weakens the labor force. Dakotahgeo, this party is so dark.
Giancarlo85
@Alistair Wiseman: Kim Davis is a conservative. You seem to be unhinged. Again, that ugly liberal derangement syndrome is shoeing its face. Kim Davis has been cozy with Mike Huckabee and the Oaf Keepers. Right wing fringe idiots, much like yourself.
.@Alistair Wiseman: Oh how nice. Republicans destroyed federal funding for public schools. They don’t want people seeking a quality education. They would be harder to manipulate. Someone like you is easy to manipulate because you lack both an education and basic common sense.
Republicans have constantly attacked head start since they took Congress. You should actually be thanking democrats for putting up a fight. If it wasn’t for democrats, the program wouldn’t exist.
Republicans have caused massive damage to this country. They have gutted federal grants regarding education, they have gutted public works projects meant to restore crumbling infrastructure. They have gutted the Frank Dodd rules on financial regulation once again making this country vulnerable to white collar criminals and predatory lenders.
You are a clueless man with dangerously misplaced loyalties. You are living proof of how Republicans have failed the education system.
1EqualityUSA
The ReBiblicans keep saying the same spew over and over and over again. Some actually fall for it.
Caliban
That t-shirt should have been in Braille since only blind people might not know she’s a lesbian.
Dakotahgeo
@1EqualityUSA: Right on!
Giancarlo85
@Caliban: Thanks for posting stereotypes. Have any other ignorance you want to share?
sportyguy1983
Anyone who didn’t know she is a lesbian is deaf, blind, and dumb
Giancarlo85
@sportyguy1983: And what does that have to do with the topic?
This is the problem with these old fat trolls. They think they have all the answers.
Alistair Wiseman
@1EqualityUSA:
You stated, “I hope they (Republicans) never taste power again.”
What are you talking about?
Well, let’s see:
• Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives
• Republicans have a majority in the Senate
• Republicans have a majority of the state legislatures
• Republicans have a majority of the governorships
“Gerrymandering, cheating, and suppressing votes can carry them so far,” indeed.
Giancarlo85
@Alistair Wiseman: Oh yes… the typical argument of an idiot. For one, they haven’t done shit with their majority in the House of Representatives or Senate. They are in severe danger of losing many governorships (look at the sinking approval ratings of republican governors across the board). The most popular governors are Democrats (including Jerry Brown who has sky high approval ratings even in his second term).
The republicans only won the Senate because of depressingly low turn-out in the 2014 midterms.
The majority of Americans are NOT republicans. If turn-out was higher, republicans would never win. Republicans haven’t won a general election for the White House since 2004.
Dakotahgeo
@Giancarlo85: You do understand, correct, that Ali-stirthepot Wiseman is a Fox Noise/WND junkie. He isn’t even a good, astute right winger! Pity him/her.
Giancarlo85
And look guys, Alistair has abandoned responding to all the other points about republicans screwing over this country… so he brings up irrelevant nonsense.
Funny how the state with the most economic growth and success has a democrat dominated legislature, every state wide office controlled by democrats and a democratic governor (Jerry Brown!). This just shows republicans don’t know shit and can’t run shit. Take Bobby Jindal and John Kasich. Arguably two of the worst Governors in this country who took relative success and destroyed it.
Alistair Wiseman
@1EqualityUSA:
You stated, “Republicans Kill [sic] head start…”
I gave you the 2014 numbers from Head Start. Does it sound like Republicans are killing Head Start when $9,272.00 is spent on each 5 year old every year?
By your post, as a good leftist, is anything up for debate? Is anything ever to be cut? Government reports exist about the fraud and ineffectiveness of Head Start. Does this matter or is it “always about the children”?
1EqualityUSA
Alistair, Not for long.
1EqualityUSA
Alistair Wiseman, I’ve asked you on several threads if you think that the wall of separation should be maintained between Church and state and you never responded to that question. That’s so [sic].
Dakotahgeo
@1EqualityUSA: 😉 Alistair is not a Wise man!
1EqualityUSA
Dakotahgeo, We’ll see if Alistair Mormon [sic] answers this time about separation of church and state.
Dakotahgeo
@1EqualityUSA: I believe “Alistair Moron would be closer to the truth (Does he not remind you of a certain bacterial troll in the past by the name of Hooper/Frank/et al?).
Giancarlo85
@Alistair Wiseman: Funding has been cut and the program has been undercut by republicans. Is that so difficult for you to understand?
You want all sorts of government programs cut, but you fail to realize republican states would be hurting the most if that happens. You are delusional.
Alistair Wiseman
@1EqualityUSA:
You state the separation of church and state as a legal term. It is not. Liberals have done a very good job of having Americans believe it is in our founding documents. It is not.
The term ‘separation of church and state’ comes from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Baptists of Danbury, Connecticut in 1802.
The First Admendment’s Establishment Clause prohibits the government from making any law respecting an “establishment of religion.” This clause forbids the government from establishing an official religion.
I believe in a religious country and a secular government like we have always had. We have never had a state religion, nor have we ever come close to having a theocracy (even when our country was much more religious).
1EqualityUSA
Ted Cruz, Jindal, Huckabee and the rest are crossing the line. They will slide off into oblivion, as they should, but don’t pretend that what they would push on American citizens is true democracy. What a load.
