Texas Governor Rick Perry admittedly does not know whether gay “reparative therapy” actually works, but he does know one thing for certain: Gays are like alcoholics, and they should just choose to stop drinking.
Perry’s comments were made during a speech to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco last night. He’s been peddling this belief since at least 2008, when he said in his first book “On My Honor” that homosexuality could be equated to alcoholism, is a “sexual dysfunction,” and gays should choose to remain abstinent.
Perry, who recently announced support for access to “reparative therapy” in Texas (a practice banned by law in California) and previously opposed the Boy Scout’s new inclusive policy for gay scouts, reaffirmed his asinine position while answering whether he believed homosexuality is a disorder:
“Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that. I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”
They say everything’s bigger in Texas, which explains why the state’s governor is one of the biggest morons in political history.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Speaking of morons — Fox News published an article covering the event this morning, alleging that Ricky Perry “reportedly” compared homosexuality to alcoholism. Even though this observation is a fact, the conservative news giant chose to cover Perry’s comments from an angle that presented the San Francisco Chronicle‘s “reported” version of events.
Fox News competitors ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN all reported the same event in a matter-of-fact way.

He’s not worth the air needed to formulate a good read on his stupid ass.
Nowuvedoneit
@DB75: Agreed.
David
I think Rick Perry may be tipping his hand as to his own sexuality, which allegedly includes at least a streak of gay.
Since he’s in a marriage with a woman, he may have to actively “abstain” from sex with men.
This may actually be his perspective, as someone who can have sex with both men and women.
Paco
Isn’t it usually the self-loathing closet cases that support gay reparative therapy? Have something you want to tell us, Governor Rick?
Cam
OF COURSE he wants it to be like alcoholism. Because alcoholics can stop drinking and after they are off it for a while they can stop the cravings.
Why would Perry hope that this is true? Because he’s a big ole closet case.
1EqualityUSA
It takes an abstainer to know an abstainer.
Ben Dover
You can CHOOSE to hookup with guys in classier places than highway rest stops.
Or maybe Rick can’t, therefore he needs to abstain completely. Oops!
Bad Ass Biker
Rick Perry – dumb as a post and yes, most likely a closet case.

Reverend Perrywinkle is a legend in the local Austin gay community, as in ON THE DL, i.e., a Larry Craig-style Repuke hypocrite gay-basher who is also a man-on-man sex enthusiast, complete with a marriage of convenience. I’ll refrain from naming names. Let’s just say that “the boys” were either paid off or scared off by Karl Rove’s Repug goon squad–or both. Nowutimsayin?
How he continues to paint a picture of himself as anything other than that definitely speaks for his terminal case of delusional arrogance–sort of par for the course for Evangelical Dumbf**k Gay bashing holier than thou/latter day Pharisee “Christian” RepugnantCons, yes?
If the Rev really wants to walk his talk, then by all means bubba, sign up for the reparative therapy–I imagine they’d give you a preferred-customer discount with all of your high level contacts. Maybe even Marcus Bachmann could help pray away the gay in ya.
And PS: after spreading gay hatred and doubtlessly inciting violence against gay youth (ergo upping the incidences of gay teen suicides in Texas) by presiding over your Reliant Stadium/Houston God-A-thon Festival of Hate before 30,000 of your zonked out Christy zombies in August of 2011, one simple question, Reverend: How can you even stand to look at yourself in the mirror for all of your hypocrisy, and your spreading of hatred and death, you slimy, smarmy, corporate-owned Repug bastard? Does all the cash from your equally phony and self-serving billionaire backers who look the other way about your double life help you ease the pain of your inner darkness? Just wondering, Ricky boy.
Jesus wept.
Kieran
Gay “reparative therapy” is also banned in NJ.
DB75
@GymJockTX: I don’t recall seeing him at Bull Creek or Peace Park. But then again, I was busy little boy back in the day. 🙂
GymJockTX
@DB75: I had my share of fun at Bull Creek too–which is,I suppose, an advantage of being OUT to your family, friends and clients.
Some say Ricky boy should be pitied for living in a Texas sized closet. Fact is, I never spoke out about his BS until the Reliant stadium hate festival. That was the last straw for me. Prior to that, I couldn’t have cared less if he’s actually attending secret orgies with Mittens as his wing man.
But being instrumental in the physical, psychological and spiritual torture of the youth of our tribe, inciting them to off themselves to end their godawful misery? Don’t expect all of us to take it in stride, Reverend Perrywinkle. I sure as fuck won’t.
DB75
@GymJockTX: I hear ya. I knew a few politicians that were closeted back in the day. Never ran into Rick, though. Hell, I might have but since he isn’t my type I’d likely have ignored him.
Not that it matters, but I met my husband at Pease Park. That was in 1993. Oh lord, showing my age. lol
LubbockGayMale
Thank GOD Texas is getting rid of Guv Good Hair next election, but that means he’s being let loose to spread his BS across GOP/TP America and FAUXNews. Sorry for this smelly export, folks.

@1EqualityUSA: @1EqualityUSA</aeXC@1EqualityUSA: Excellent!

I likens Christianity to mental illness. I rather be HOMOSEXUAL, then a Christian.

GymJockTx, God that was beautiful! Read 8 posts back. It read like Mozart!

@1EqualityUSA:
Thanks, mate. Freelance writer here. Made my day there. Gracias from Austin.
1EqualityUSA
Yeah, The, “Jesus wept.” at the end was an accoutrement that sealed it. Good luck with your writing.
GymJockTX
@1EqualityUSA: Haha thanks. Actually, my first book is about to post onto Amazon. Decades of research behind it.
james_in_cambridge
@Mezaien: Amen! I may have been born Catholic but I now CHOOSE to disavow that hypocritical, sick religion too. All religion in fact! No one has done more to create the record number of Atheists in America today, as well as the record number of gay marriage supporters, like Christianity and Islam have (approval of gay marriage has hit 60% – the number of Americans who think we were born gay has hit 65%.) So, in a way, we kind of owe the religious loons a debt of gratitude.

GymJockTX, If your book is about political figures in Texas, I’m positive “Perrywinkle” will be quaking. Good luck to you with your project and thanks for the laugh.
GymJockTX
@james_in_cambridge: Well put, James. Ex-Catholic here, too. And I think you’ve hit on a positive way to spin this: the hateful “Christians” and other dim-bulb extremists are helping our tribe gain more support and empathy. I picture Perrywinkle, Karl Rove, Rush Lindberger Cheese and all of their ilk having wicked witch of the West meltdowns before all of this ugliness plays out.
If Perrywinkle keeps this up, it’s only a matter of time before he sinks his own ship. Mixing lies, hatefulness and bullshit therapies with Jesus simply don’t work.
Thanks for posting, James.
GymJockTX
@1EqualityUSA: Thanks, man. Nah, book isn’t about Texas politics, too much attention is already paid to our paper-doll cowboy rubes and stooges.
james_in_cambridge
@GymJockTX: Put a link to your book here when it’s ready! I’d love to read it. Especially if it’s about these fucked up loons.
manjoguy
Not EVERY Democrat loves us, you know. Mississippi passed its Anti-Gay Segregation Bill with BI-PARTISAN support! So, it’s not just Texas water the people are drinking..(http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/2014/02/27/mississippi_anti_gay_segregation_discrimination_bill_got_unanimous_bipartisan.html) Here in Massachusetts and New Hampshire each has a gay candidate running for a congressional seat who is Republican!
GymJockTX
@james_in_cambridge: Will do, thanks. “Fucked up loons” >> Good descriptor. Spot on.
1EqualityUSA
“Paper doll cowboy rubes and stooges…” Love it. Neil Young-esque.
GymJockTX
@1EqualityUSA: Awesome, thanks. Love Neil Young. His “Harvest” is still one of the best albums of all time, IMO.
1EqualityUSA
Yes, one time my mother heard Neil Young whining his way through a song and she said, “Whatever possessed that man to go into singing for a living? Didn’t his mother pull him aside and say, “You can’t sing.” What would this world be like if we were all clones? I’m sure Jerry Garcia’s ma loved her boy’s voice. I know I did. In high school, when someone sneezed, we’d say, “Jerry bless you.”
