At 90 years young, this lovely Chinese grandmother took a rather bold step by publicly supporting her gay grandson; but like every grandma she just wants him to find a nice somebody to settle down with already.
“I am 90-years old,” the nana says in the above video, produced by PFLAG China. ”My grandson is gay. He is kind and mature. I hope he will find a boyfriend and live a happy life. And I hope our government supports him.”
At the end of the video she holds up a sign that reads, “we urge the legalization of gay marriages.”
Even though LGBT people are increasingly accepted in Chinese society, the 90-year-old’s video has pleasantly surprised many in the country’s LGBT community. According to her 28-year-old grandson, an engineer in Fuzhou who goes by the alias Mutou, she “will have to deal with lots of pressure from strangers and relatives.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Mutou came out to his parents last year, but it was his nonagenarian nana that was the most supportive and understanding. “She even tried to calm my parents — who were less accepting in the beginning — and asked them to take it easy,” Mutou told the South China Morning Post. “She did it out of simple love.”
Parents in China are slowly coming around, however. In February, over 100 parents of gays and lesbians wrote an open letter to China’s National People’s Congress demanding marriage equality for their kids.
Hopefully, Mutou will make his grandma happy and find a boyfriend…and if he does, we’re totally recruiting our nanas to record dating videos for us, too.

What a wonderful grandmother! With age often comes wisdom and pragmatism overcomes emotional reactions. My grandmother helped my parents see the bigger picture and keep a calm head in so many instances, so this story sounds familiar. She has a beautiful heart.
