A gay waiter at Carrabbaâs Italian Grill in Kansas was denied a tip by patrons because of his sexual orientation. Instead the couple left him the following note:
âThank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD. Queers do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours. We hope you will see the tip your fag choices made you lose out on, and plan accordingly. It is never too late for GODâs love, but none shall be spared for fags. May GOD have mercy on you.â
Carrabas released a statement saying that the company does not tolerate discrimination from either employees or guests.
âWe embrace diversity and believe in treating everyone with respect,â the statement read.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
However, company officials declined to say what action if any would be taken if the homophobic couple returned.
Since the story first broke earlier this week, a number of patrons have rallied in support of the server, whose mother also works at the restaurant as a hostess.
Dr. Marvin Baker and his partner had lunch at the restaurant on Thursday and requested to be seated in the serverâs section. Baker served as a pastor for many years and currently leads a Bible study group for LGBT members.
âI said, âWe are here to meet your celebrity. The one who was mistreated.â She said, âThatâs my son. Would you like a table or booth?â I said, âWherever heâs serving,â Baker told local news station WTVM.
He continued: âThis does not represent Christianity. I called them Pharisees. God really loves us. And God does not advertise or promote hate. That is not love.â
As for the server, he is doing his best to avoid the spotlight and move on, though he did release a short statement which read: âThe offers to help pay me back are much appreciated, but not at all needed. Iâd prefer to let my work ethic and my service do the talking, nothing else.â
Kamuriie
Mind-blowing. I’m so sorry, young waiter! Don’t let ignorance phase you. People do love you, and nobody can speak for the divine.
Baileynl
So how did they know he was gay ?
loua61
@Baileynl: That is exactly what I was thinking, did he offer sex to the male customer? I cannot stand these phony, holier than thou Christians anymore. I live in backward bible beating south and sit right next to a Christian, (she listens to the bible all day on her head phones, goes to church on her 2 hour lunch break and goes to bible school at night. After the tenth time of her telling me I need to get married, I told her as soon as this state allows me to get married I will. It took her a day to figure it out and she no longer speaks to me. Nice Christian huh.
Anyway to hell with that couple, I hope next time they go out they get food poisoning. Assholes!
stranded
Wow. I mean finally, a decent excuse to get out of tipping.
Ogre Magi
So many christians, so few lions
avesraggiana
@stranded: Hahaha!!!! LIKE!
sfbeast
People already use their fictitious religions as an excuse for murder and terrorism, so getting out of paying a tip seems like just another fringe benefit.
Eiswirth
I’m almost speechless at the cruelty of these “Christians.” Like they said, “May God have mercy on you.” They are the one’s who will be asking for God’s mercy, come Judgement Day.
Daveliam
What I find most amazing is that many christians are the first to cite religious persecution when their beliefs are challenged, but fail to see that by doing stuff like this, they are forcing their beliefs onto others. Only about 1/3 of the planet identifies as Christian, so why exactly should their religious beliefs dictate what the rest of us do?
As an athiest, I genuinely do not care what their religious doctrine says any more than I care about any of the other world religions, but for some reason, many christians think it’s appropriate to continuously dictate that I live my life by their rules. There’s nothing in this article to indicate that this waiter is christian, so why would they feel the need to push their beliefs onto him?
tardis
@Baileynl: Guys, no need to sugarcoat anything. You can tell some people are gay just by looking at them. Doesn’t mean they are, but you can tell.
Anyways, stories like these amaze me. So, these people are going to inherit the kingdom? Seriously?
bblueskye
I wonder how the couple knew he was gay myself, but regardless, this is pretty ridiculous even if they assumed someone was gay.

Does it matter?
TampaBayTed
These so-called Christians want to be thrown to lions with rubber teeth; everyone else must be thrown to real lions. Imagine if this couple had written something like that about a racial minority or a Muslim. There would be a picket line around the restaurant and they wouldn’t be waiting for tables.
Steve Rider
Religion can be used as a virtual weapon when people use it to justify bigotry. Of course if we did not want to uphold the Sanctity of Bigotry we would not need religion.
I’d say this couple were cheap jerks who were not happy just to skip the tip, but felt compelled to leave what they thought was a putdown as well. This is clearly malicious behavior. Praise be to Sky Monster!
G FG
If all these religious fanatics will be inheriting the Kingdom of Heaven, I’m definitely sure I don’t want to be where they will be living in eternity bliss.
robho3
I cant believe this shit is happening in 2013. Of course it happened in a red state.
ouragannyc
@bblueskye: Come on, sometimes you can guess right.
Dixie Rect
This story sounds like BS.
murphy0071
Those crazy “Christians” probably were rewarded by their congregation. They are from Kansas and likely attend the Westboro Baptist Church and are related to the Phelps. They are surely going to hell where they belong. They must have that old time religion GayDar. They should move to Russia along and join the skin heads who are persecuting GLBT persons by luring them, taking pictures of them being beaten. Putin would give them full citizenship and the highest award of all Russia.
mdventura
I would delight in their return, ask if there were feeling well after their last visit, and (with a smile) indicate that I no longer remove water spots from glasses with a napkin and several puffs of hot breath.
corey
I hope they used a Credit Card, that way, a little digging could locate them, and show them what I think of people like them. Chances are, I’d never travel to a red state with our a gun, all those “stand your ground laws” make me too nervous. I’d have to be a head of the nxt red neck that intimidated me so chances are is never get far enough in a red state to show these pieces of sh@t what I think of them. I don’t think they realize how lucky they are !!!
Alan down in Florida
Too bad they didn’t notify him of their intentions in advance. He could have peed in the minestrone before serving it.
BRENT
These people are deranged, beyond help or logic. Don’t just laugh at them and treat them as figures of fun though, for they are truly dangerous.
We have a few of these nutters in England, but without appearing to be rude, it does seem to be a rather American problem. I don’t know the answer; perhaps there is none, but this pair of bigots do not represent any form of Christianity I have ever heard of.
Apart from which, they were damned rude!
Rob
@robho3: “Of course it happened in a red state.”
Yeah because in a blue state like NY, they just take you out and kick the shit out of you.

Why hate can a Christian explain to me why? The hating Christian seem like the worse in the world

Most Christians are too dumb to know their own history…..
Excerpt;
For the Church to ignore the evidence in its own archives would be cowardly and deceptive. The evidence convincingly shows that what the modern church claims has always been its unchanging attitude towards homosexuality is, in fact, nothing of the sort.
It proves that for the last two millennia, in parish churches and cathedrals throughout Christendom, from Ireland to Istanbul and even in the heart of Rome itself, homosexual relationships were accepted as valid expressions of a [Christian] god-given love and commitment to another person, a love that could be celebrated, honored and blessed, through the Eucharist in the name of, and in the presence of, Jesus Christ.
“… in the evening the youth came to him [Jesus], wearing a linen cloth over his naked body. And he remained with him that night, for Jesus taught him the mystery of the Kingdom of God. And thence, arising, he returned to the other side of the Jordan.” âThe Secret Gospel of Mark, The Other Bible, Willis Barnstone, Editor, Harper & Row, San Francisco, 1984, pp. 339-342.

Hypothetically Christian! Allegedly Christian! Allegedly moral! Allegedly compassionate! Allegedly human!
Definitely judgmental! Probably just mental! Definitely presumptuous! Definitely condescending! Definitely does not comprehend the message of God or Christ!

@dbmcvey: does it matter? No, guess not. It would also be homophobia if he identifies as straight. It just somehow blows my mind even more if they based there horrible bigotry on stupid stereotyping.

Christ would not agree with their actions at all. So, they really aren’t Christians, their just bigots pretending.

It is true-some lbgt people are obvious. They take the brunt of hate from people like these false Christians.

Use the second amendment. They are quite fond of it in the hell called Kansas.

No they don’t. And NY law is quite specific. I am happily married in NYS and will not tolerate this kind of pharisee shit.

So-called “fundamentalist” “Christians” are actually people anally STUCK in rigid belief systems, fraught with emotional constipation, nursing having a desperate need to feel “one up” to SOMEONE else. In earlier years such types lynched people; now we’re their target of opportunity. Hardly worth comment, aside from saying: “Only a fool is surprised when a stunk stinks.” Still, a pretty complex way to dodge a tip! What fools those morsels be!”
DarkZephyr
@Dixie Rect: Yeah, kind of like that myth about the Westboro Baptist Church picketing funerals and holding “God Hates Fags” signs. Sounds SO made up too!
Chris Vogel
This is about typical for conservative and evangelical Christians and their religion: selfish, totally self-indulgent, arrogant, malicious. Indeed, that is why they are conservative Christians, so that they can do this kind of thing and imagine they can get away with it. Really, their faith consists of little else. It would be wise for receptionists, maĂŽtre d’s and waitstaff to inquire about prospective diners’ religion before admitting them to a restaurant.

Not all Christians are like these 2 douches thankfully so please know they arent all as vile repugnant and ignorant as these 2 dolts are and were.
The waiters attitude is true class I myself would have found it hard to restrain from going for their uneducated jugulars.
Bozen
Eh..as someone who’s worked in the service industry for about 6 years I can truthfully say black people tip even worse.
Leiah
Don’t you love it? Christians say that they are all about God and love and compassion and caring for others. And yet, they are the meanest, most vicious, sanctimonious people on the face of the Earth. They are totally repugnant in their hate towards not only gays, but women, children and anyone else on the planet that they think aren’t as good as they are. It makes me sad, but most of all, it makes me angry and frustrated!
Charlie in Charge
On the other hand it’s nice that a pastor chose to make amends.
Teleny
@Bozen: how can anyone tip worse than nothing?
mezzacanadese
I think what those people did was awful, but I must add that I am a Christian, and I have many gay people in my life that I love. In addition, the clergy at my church are all gay. As a former waitress, though, I know how much hard work is involved in the job. I always treated my customers well, but they didn’t always tip accordingly. Once someone left me 5 pennies. I felt like running after him and throwing them at hiim.
Rob
@Bozen: “Eh..as someone whoâs worked in the service industry for about 6 years I can truthfully say black people tip even worse.”
Try yankees and Canadian Snowbirds. If they don’t tip, they usually try eating half their food and sending it back and make demands to be comped a free meal. If you’re wait staff in any of the Snowbird enclaves in Florida, you can pretty much forget tips from anyone out of state. “How can I screw the restaurant” seems to be a competitive sport.
Dakotahgeo
I am an ordained gay Christian minister and we have a group of our congregants and friends who will be attending Cabbarra’s Italian Grill between 104th & 105th on Metcalf Avenue (Overland Park) next weekend. We all live within 5 miles of the establishment! This wonderful young man has been inundated with big tippers and well-wishers since this happened. I would give x amt. of $$$$ to find out who that “christian” couple was who spewed vomit on that restaurant! I and my friends cannot wait to meet this young man and his Mom, and all the wonderful employees who are standing in support of him! This typifies the REAL KANSAS CHRISTIANS!!!
DrDrew
I totally understand how they got it wrong… it’s not that Queers don’t share IN the wealth of God, it’s “Queers, DON’T share the wealth of God.” It’s a little known piece of scripture that says that we’re not supposed to share our money with anyone. In the book of Mary, I think. Sadly, most of us gays are really bad about it and we tip well.
halfahomo
Just another case of some religious fanatics taking out their bible and whacking it over the head of some guy who is of a life orientation that threatens their pathetic…oops, pure, I mean, living. “Imagine no religion…JL”
BlogZilla
It’s sad Christians can’t see how narrow, judgmental and mean they are.
The1Church
IDIOTS.This is the only real way to say this. These people obviously read the Bible, but they haven;t a clue in the world how to LIVE it! I find this behavior REPREHENSIBLE! We need to start an online campaign to generate a tip for this man, so that these people can see their actions only brought a GREATER blessing to him! I will be the first to donate!
Galatians 6:10 KJV
As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
1 Thessalonians 5:15 KJV
See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
1 Thessalonians 4:12 KJV
That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

UGH! Disgusting people thinking they can get away with it, I hope they get their karma!

Ignorance oozes out of every pore! What haven’t to the Blood of Christ?

These individuals have nerve calling themselves Christians, hateful is more like it – what they did was nasty and casts a poor light on people of faith, many of whom are lgbt. The Server’s take is pure class, and he clearly has the right perspective. No one is perfect, but we can at least try to treat each other with respect. “Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.” â 1 John 2:9-10
Cam
They are the typical Right Wing bigots using phony Christianity to excuse their bad behavior.
Look, they are cheap and didn’t want to leave a tip. If they REALLY put their money where their mouth’s were, they wouldn’t have eaten in his section, or they wouldn’t have eaten in a restaurant that had a gay waiter. Did they do that? No, They ate there, they accepted the service, then they didn’t want to leave a tip and tried to use the Bible as an excuse for the fact that they are cheap bigots.
BJ McFrisky
Stoopid religion.

Their names and address are known.
That is all I will say on this matter.

@Cam: — I completely agree with you, Cam! That’s all that religion really is, is a cover for those persons not capable of independent, rational thought to hide under, and to shift responsibility away.
Dakotahgeo
@Cam:@D P: Usually I tend to disagree with you both but you are really spot on the mark regarding these faux “Christians” and their stinginess! I do support all people, Christian, pagans, atheists, and all other religions, but I also as a devout Christian cannot stomach those who make the rest of us look or sound bad. Three of my friends and I will be going to this restaurant this coming weekend and will also ask for the ‘celebrity’ server. (Only approx. 5 miles away). My understanding is that he has been VERY busy!!! đ

These people inly think they are Christians. They are
bigoted cheapskates. Nasty combination.
Jerry12
Unfortionately, since there never has been a “GOD” as designed by these Bible Thumpers, nor does there seem to be any proof that one will come along any day soon; So, why do people pay any attention to these crackpots?
“Religions” were invented by primitive MAN out of “Fear of the unknown”. After all, the “Earth” was flat and one could fall off if one walked far enough to the edge, and “Thunder” and “Lightning” were the acts of angry “GODS”. People “Died” (Were in a Coma) and suddenly came back to life because of a “GOD”; Etc, Etc, Etc.
OH! WHAT! The Tribal Leaders were unable to answer questions about these natural events, so they invented “GODS” as the causes? Then, they realized that they could use these invented non existent “GODS” as a source of all kinds of Commands and Rules to gain complete control over the lives of the everyday people of the Tribe. Welcome to the many “Religions” that control the lives of Millions of People who have a “Fear Of The Unknown” complex in their lives.
Rob
@Jerry12: Sorta like democrats and global warmism.
Dakotahgeo
@D P: Au contrare! đ Christianity allows me to be TOTALLY independent and at the same time exhorts us to be totally responsible for our words AND actions. It really makes us more free in the long run. With benefits come responsibility! Nice combination! Cheers!

@TampaBayTed: How was the restaurant at fault here, so why should it be picketed? It was the hypocritical pseudo-Christians who need publicity. Fortunately when their time comes, the Heavenly Gates will slam shut before them!
AxelDC
This couple was so offended that they stiffed their waiter on his tip. Of course, they ate the food he served them without gagging.
These people aren’t principled; they are just cheap.
