Cleve Jones Is Thrilled to Be Appointed Leader of New Gay Activsts

The one-time AIDS Quilt stitcher Cleve Jones is spearheading October's march on Washington thingamajig, and the effort is as much about you and your rights as it is Cleve's own bliss! "There was a time when I thought I would never be happy again," says Jones. "I feel so connected to the movement again." Facebook helps.

THANK YOU for not quoting the whole hurl-inducing article.

But if anyone out there knows how to contact hack er AP writer Lisa Leff, please slap the shit out of her for describing Jones as "the closest the gay rights movement has to a living legend."

Gee, that would be news to even President Obama who has now hosted pioneer Frank Kameny at the White House twice.

Or MCC founder Troy Perry.

Or NY gay rights pioneer Randy Wicker.

Or Daughters of Bilitis cofounder Phyllis Lyon.

Or Jose Sarria.

Or any number of other pre-Stonewall gay rights pioneers still living.

Leff isn't your run-of-the-mill retard given that she wrote an obituary last year for Lyon's partner Del Martin and also quotes David Mixner in THIS article who was fighting for gay rights before Jones.

Perhaps it's just early Alzheimers.

I like Cleve Jones a lot, and I do think of him as a gay leader.

But I'm sure y'all will let the destructive crap fly because god forbid we actually have a gay rights movement that moves in the same direction at the same time.

Cleve Jones said it best: "A consensus in our community? Get real."

A consensus in any "community" of millions of members spread over different economic and environmental situations is probably a hard thing to accomplish.

I personally wish Cleve Jones only success and good health.

Take a look to the right. You see all the blog pictures? What do they have in common? Yes, they are all white men. A shame.

@Truth Be Told: Phyllis Lyon an/or Frank Kameny are excellent ideas for people to unite us.

I saw Kameny on Colbert a few weeks back and he is erudite, poised and determined(without being shrill). He is a very good ambassador for gay and lesbian North Americans.

Phyllis Lyon could be better, though, given that any of the anti-gays would have a *very* difficult time badmouthing, mocking, or pulling any nasty media stunts on someone who looks like lotsa folks grandmas. She is also very experienced in gay politics, and has "walked the walk" too.

@TomEM: Thanks for letting us know about Kameny being on Colbert. Have to go look for that now.

@Tallyho:

"What do they have in common? Yes, they are all white men."

And naked. What is up with that? No wonder so few lesbians comment on the site. Queerty should take the lesbian couple off of the logo.

@Truth Be Told:

The persons you mentioned are all very worthy of the title, however, they are all how shall we say…hmmm, not spring chickens.

Also, Cleve is post stonewall generation, and it is this generations turn to lead… and the leader thing is probably the post Milk-the-movie halo. C'mon the guy was kid back then and later started the Quilt. He is as contemporary as a hero as we are gonna get.

@Truth Be Told:

I have nothing but love for Cleve Jones, but I'm glad someone remembers Jose Sarria, the first known out gay candidate for public office and founder of the second oldest continuing gay organization in the world.

@Qjersey:

I only referenced the inanity of the AP writer's criteria of "living"…and INSULT to those who still are, "spring chickens" or not.

But now that you mention it, what kind of "brilliant leader" schedules a national protest on the federal government to happen in Washington THE WEEKEND NONE OF ITS TARGETS WILL BE THERE?????

@Bri:

Too true…Unfortunately we live in a hyper stereotypical world where every demographic has its perceived symbols in the media…so being gay is being white male, being black is being obama, being asian is being "successful corporate hack with half white kids" and so on and so forth….

He is passionately working (WORKING) for change. The interesting thing about 99.9% of the critics on this site do ZERO activism themselves, they do nothing for the movements but feel justified criticizing those working for their rights as they sit on bar stools and laptops bitching.

Okay, so now we're hating on Cleve Jones? WTF???? I hate stereotypes, but you guys are living illustrations of the one about "bitter queens," aren't you?
