We’re ripping down the idyllic beach sunset photos from our dream boards because after watching this gay wedding proposal on Italy’s Got Talent, it’s clear we suddenly have some new life goals.

First off, everything about this scene just screams romance. You have a giant white dragon, space-age go-go attire, a guy on stilts and a lady in a harness ready to float into the sky and shower you with silver glitter. Swoon.
Next, there’s these four energetic panelists there to either praise or judge you, and isn’t that really just the best metaphor for marriage? It can be nurturing, sure, but piss someone off and you’ll be sleeping on the couch tonight.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
And then there’s the big moment, captured on television for all to aww at. Or, you know, check out his ass.

I don’t like public proposals, gay or straight. For all of you brought to tears of joy and celebration by this video, remember that gay marriage is not legal in Italy. Here are a few other facts, courtesy of Wikipedia:
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) persons in Italy face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1890, but same-sex couples and households headed by same-sex couples are not eligible for the same legal protections available to opposite-sex couples. Although discrimination regarding sexual orientation in employment has been banned since 2003, no other anti-discrimination laws regarding sexual orientation or gender identity and expression have been enacted yet.

Like Americans who sometimes have to go to another state to marry, I’m sure these guys can go to another EEC country to marry. Spain is an obvious choice.

@rickhfx: My guess is that the European Union will ratify gay marriage within 7 years, then all member nations will need to comply. The great thing about this being an Italian video is that it’s an in-your-face message to The Vatican.
PS — OMG, the female judge has shaven underarms! 🙂 I don’t have a stance either way but I remember how surprised Sophia Loren’s underarms were in her early Italian movies.
Realitycheck
@Bryguyf69: Believe me Italians couldn’t care less of the vatican,
90% or more of vatican tourists now a day are polish and Korean and few other countries.
Italians like most western Nations have become allergic to religion and the church.
From that point of view here in the USA we are still behind………..
Bryguyf69
@Bryguyf69: Er, I meant, “how hairy Sophia Loren’s underarms were in her early Italian movies.” My typo made no sense but is strangely humorous. We watched some of her early movies in Cinema Studies. SOme frat boys thought it would be funny to throw disposable razors at the screen whenever Loren’s hairy underarms were exposed.
Clark35
@Realitycheck: True in Italy most people are for same gender marriage and LGBT rights and if they’re Roman Catholic they’re not hardcore Roman Catholic the way some people are here in the United States.
Bryguyf69
@Clark35: Even in the US, several polls show that a majority of Catholics now support gay marriage. Needless to say, younger and more educated Catholics overwhelmingly support it.
jwtraveler
@musctop: TOO bad that you’re TOO stupid to engage in intelligent, rational discussion without resorting to cheap insults.

Political pundit and CNN host, Fareed Zakaria, is fond of pointing out that Americans differ from most Western nations on the “3 G’s” — Gays, Guns and God. Even the nation that is most like us, Canada, is more in line with progressive Western Europe. While I agree with Zakaria, if the Supreme Court rules our way, we will surprisingly beat sexually-progressive nations like Germany, Italy, Australia, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic (the European capital of gay porn) in gay marriage.
Speaking of gay marriage, I was impressed that in 2010, the host and 3 of the 4 semifinalist nations in the soccer World Cup performed gay marriages. The semifinalists were Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, and Uraguay. Germany doesn’t perform gay marriages but recognizes them and has civil unions. In addition, host nation South Africa has gay equality, including marriage, written into its Constitution.

@jwtraveler: You’re miserable.
Congratulations to the beautiful couple! This public proposal brings to many Italians something they’ve been told is ugly and evil, but obviously is not. Glad to observe the judges and crowd reacting so enthusiastically.
Bryguyf69
It’s noteworthy that the above proposal video was posted by Italia’s Got Talent, not a viewer. Being posted by the official copyright owner means that it has official recognition, and even celebrated by the show itself.

Canada has had legal gay marriage since 2005. We were only the 4th country to do it. We also have adoption rights and all the other rights of straight people. We’re not that similar to the U.S. Religion doesn’t play a big role in our government like it does in the U.S. and gun laws are much stricter here.

I hope the pope was watching the show;

@Spike: They are a Cirque du Soleil type of act. The performance in question has been posted on Italia’s Got Talent’s official website, but it’s not viewable in the US without using a false proxy.

@jwtraveler: While I understand what you’re saying, it’s not all that relevant to this couple. This is a French act, and gay marriage is legal in France. He simply proposed on a show that happened to be in Italy. It’s like proposing on vacation. Of note, the proposal was done in English — despite the couple being French and the audience being Italian. My guess is that he knew it would become viral and used English because it’s the current lingua franca. Similarly, I watched a Chinese variety show a few years ago where one of the performers was Japanese. Despite the proximity of Japan and China, and similarities of the written languages, the host and guest conversed in broken English.

Too bad Italy is waaaay behind the times and still hasn’t made gay marriage legal yet. What a pathetic country.

I just think this was very bad and stereotypical. Why can’t the two guys be wearing some clothes? The whole thing smells of a stunt riddled with stereotypes.
While I wish these two guys the best, I don’t approve of how they did it. It’s tacky.

You seem confused. You do realize that this proposal occurred after a performance, right? Their reason for being there is not a proposal, but to perform and compete in Italia Got Talent. Given the type of act (see the Audition video I posted above), how would you want them to dress? Do you want them in a turtleneck and corduroy? Compare with the acrobats/contortionists in Cirque du Soleil or even in Ringling Bros. Furthermore, stop judging this through your Puritannical American (?) eyes. The French and Italian view flesh and [semi]nudity with much less sensationalism than you.
Stereotype? Yeah, they dress like circus performer stereotypes. How these are gay stereotypes is beyond me.

@Bryguyf69: And they make a significant amount of money from their online clips. Trust me, they’re not remotely interested in promoting equality; they’re interested in profit. They’d just as happily post a clip of some anti-gay marriage rant if it was from someone dressed in sequins and making the right sort of spectacle of themselves.

Bryguyf69
@OzJosh: What money? Their clips are not monetized. If they were monetized, there would be ads preceding the video. Furthermore, the same videos are available on their official website, and they certainly don’t pay themselves for posting videos. Sure it attracts attention to the show, but it was still a willful decision to highlight something controversial and potentially divisive. Gay marriage, after all, is not recognized in Italy.
Bryguyf69

If their goal was, in part, to make a political statement, how can it be accomplished without “attention seeking”? They should be applauded for risking a place in the competition to make a statement for gay equality. It’s not like they went public for financial gain, i.e. Star Jones and her wedding controversy on The View, or anything to do with The Kardashians. These guys had no sponsors, and they likely lost potential future sponsors.
Bryguyf69
@jason smeds: I don’t know where you live, but these are not gay stereotypes here in NYC, one of the world’s gay capitals. Gay stereotypes are what you see in The Village People or perhaps drag. What you see here are circus stereotypes, not gay stereotypes.
